Build me a Cherokee
« on: July 19, 2012, 06:05:19 PM »
Just sold my Xterra, great rig, but want more of a hunting rig.  I've had 3 Cherokees in the past and loved them.  If you were to build one, 87-01, what year would you go with, and what setup w/be preferred?  I will flat tow this at times, and possible drive on the highway w/it.  It'll have a winch, chains, cargo rack, tow bar.  What else to add?  Thx!

Coulda spent that money to build on the xterra and had a great hunting rig. I'd start rhino lining the crap outta it if its a pure toy truck. That way you don't mind pinstriping.

I have a 1990 2 door.  It's set up pretty mild.  3" lift and 31's.  I'd say that if you are going to go more than 4" on the lift you'd be best to go with a long arm kit.  I built one for wheeling that had 35's on it with 6" homebrew lift, it'd go just about anywhere.  If it's going to be a hunting rig and not wheeling, then I'd stick with a 3" - 4" lift.  As for the bumper and rack and all, build it yourself, its a lot cheaper that way.

This line of thinking can get very expensive. That's why I NEED to learn how to weld!

It's not too hard to learn. Allot of people like wire feed but I always liked stick welding

Yeah, 31 x 10.5's is what I'll probably run, so a cheaper 3" lift?  How about lockers, bad idea for running in the snow or a must have?

in the snow gears will be your friend no tire spin is key. a front locker will most of the time screw u up in the snow but if u have one then just leave one hub unlocked. maxis big horn tires are also a pretty good tire for the snow and road.
or just get a yota lol i love mine

for purely toy tires, I don't think you can beat treadwrights.

I've got a yota, and had two two others, but hard to beat those Cherokees for the price.  Any positives on a 4 runner over the Cherokee?

4 runner is not uni body like the cherokee is  for just driving up gravel roads and stuff like that mabe  little stuff here and there i think between them all its just personal preference if u were gonna make it a only trail rig i would go yota

Really depends how much you have, what your going to use it for, and how big you wanna go. But you said to build you one so my list will be fairly expensive  :chuckle: Id get a 4.5 inch rubi express lift, advanced adapters sye and cv drive line, 33" all terrains if your going to run chains, air lockers front and rear, 410 or 456 gearing depending on how much hiway driving you expect, Roof rack, arb bumper up front, and maybe a t-body spacer. I could think of lots more but will keep it at that  :chuckle:

 :yeah:

I would start with a 1992 limited 4 dr. The 92s fixed allot of the little annoying things that Cherokees were known for.
Obviously 4.0 litre.
If you are not into hard core wheeling, stick with a 4 in. or 3 in. lift. no geometry issues to deal with.
Rockrail Sliders or similar side protection "not nerf bar" are an absolute necessity.
410 rear end gears, Dana 44, rear (and fronts if you can find them)
I ran a few different setups, limited slips front and back, ARB air lockers, if I was to do it again for daily driver with offroad capability, I would run limited at both ends for better driveability.
Winch bumper, roof rack, window rain deflectors, air compressor.
Wet Okolee seat covers, cup holder, lol

Lots of good suggestions here, but to me, it all depends on what you are using it for  :dunno:

A wheeler or a dirt road runner?
