Manastash Map Question
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:10:21 PM »
Never hunted for elk in the area, but was invited by my uncle to hunt early archery elk with him there. He has hunted there in years past, and in the general vicinity below. I'm somewhat unsure of the land ownership on this map (gohunt) and just want to make sure that we are hiking through areas that are open to hunting. The PLSS sections that I have pointed out; are they private timber land? I know that the green over-layer is NFS land and the blue is a wildlife area. Any map buffs that could help me clear things up? Thanks.

All you can tell from that map is that it is private. Use the Kittitas County assessors site to find out what the ownership is. I'm sure what you're looking at is a private timber company and it's open to the public.

Thanks bobcat. That was my hunch as well. I'll be sure and look at the county assessors site to confirm. Again, appreciate the help.

I hunt Manastash every year. All of that area youre looking at is open to hunting, and flat. Lots of elk move through there, and there are some camps up near Tamarack that set up tree stands on those flats. But the elk dont like to hold up there and you'll likely see groups of 2-5 elk, if you get into elk.

Used the Kittitas County assessors site to find out the land owner and it's Plum Creek Timber Co L P. Thanks Lojack for the info. Figured it was huntable, but it never hurts to make sure.

i've hunted those areas on the map and it is all good to go...there are camps set up all over and tree stands here and there.  a great place to find elk...they are there you just have to sniff them out.  so you are good to go there.  forest service has some real nice maps of theat area.

That area is open to hunt.  I have hunted that area before and it is flat with a few tree stands scattered about.  There is some sign but only small groups of elk are going through that area.  Good luck.
USGS map of Frost Mountain is a good map of that entire area... 8)

Its more than likely to be BNSF property. Hunt your heart out and good luck.

Camped and hunted there for 20 years, pissed off that the Feds traded standing the parcels with trees to Plum Creek and a a lot of mature timber hit the ground.
Good hunting, if you hit the patches of "dog-hair" and timbered draws.

I think your arrows point to Shadow Crk and Willow Gulch.  Willow Gulch will have camps in it or around it during modern season.  It also has roads on two sides.  Shadow Creek can be pretty good since some of the elk from the top go that direction when the pressure is on.

Actually, I think that left arrow is on the big flat  area across from Willow Gulch.  That can be pretty decent too.  They travel through there.  I think the road closest to that arrow drops to Buck Meadows eventually.  We used to hunt all those areas but moved on due to the crowds and quads and trucks and motorcycles.
