A person could hide a trail camera nearby and maybe get a picture of the thief.

what about one of them realistic looking police badges. just lay it on the dash so they can see it but not read it lol could work have never tryed it though

You would think, but when my truck got broken into last they made it a point to steal my badge and wallet (they were separate). Left behind a brand new, still in plastic wrap box, set of Leupold Binocs, but just had to have that badge. I think someone did it just as an F U.

When I was a kid my grandpa would always pull up to the trailhead and leave his door halfway open while he'd hunt from dawn til dusk. He always told me that if the door is wide open most people assume that the owner is just in the woods taking a leak or something. Never had a problem.

Find people are more apt to mess with your vehicle on state or private timber company property than forest service property.

Likely because the forest service makes a trip (daily) to FS trailheads to ticket cars without a FS pass.

I typically place a trail camera watching my vehicle when I hit the backcountry. I have been gone for days and have not had a problem yet. I am sure one of these days I will be hit, unfortunate but it happens.

And here I thought the trunk monkeys were the final word in vehicle protection!
