Hey Littletoes, is your range private or public?

How do the Vanguards differ from the Mark series Weatherby's?

I know 3 guys who have owned the Mark rifles and they didn't have much good to say about em...  2 of em thought they were OK, 1 guy flat hated his.

I haed this question answered before I believe. I have  a Smith @ Wesson 30-06 that looks just like the old vanguard. Did weatherby build them or Howa for Smith and Wesson. My dad bought it back in the late 70's. ??

I know the major difference was 2-lugs vs 7-lugs on the bolt.  I loved my Vanguard.  It was my first deer sized rifle in .25-06 and it was a shooter.  It was the older generation manufactured in Japan with the fancy stock and it was heavy.  I used that rifle for deer, elk, and coyotes until it was stolen a few years ago.  One day I will replace it just to have one to shoot.  The way I use my hunting rifles though I am sure a fan of synthetic stocks.

i'm a little confused....your first post in this thread says you have 4 vanguards and they are the best shooters for the money, now you say you won't buy another weatherby...so which one's it going to be?

Vanguards have 2 lugs, Mark V Weatherby Magnums, except the 240, have 9 lugs, the 240 and rem and win mags, 270, 30-06,etc have 6 lugs.

Some hate em, some love em, kinda like binocs, scopes, trucks or women. If you're gonna go custom, model 700 is THE way to go. Matter of fact, I picked up a older ADL the other day in 30-06 for my 240 Weatherby donar.

Lets see some factory Remington mountain rifle's that'll group 5 factory loaded rounds like this.. grin...

Sagedawg-me and two friends built both the ranges, but we share all with anyone that wants to shoot, all we ask is they pick up thier garbage, including targets. No plastic targets like milk jugs etc. just paper, or steel. We use them for training/practice for upcoming matches. Because of hunting season, we have picked up most of our products.

Bucklucky-The Smith & Wesson model 1500 was built by Howa. I bought one for my dad, and it was a true bare-cat to find a load it would shoot. Its caliber was 30-06, and the load I finaly settled on was a 165 grn Nosler BT pushed by IMR 4350.  It is a true Monster to clean. It must have the roughest barrel I have ever seen, and I'm not sure I have ever gotten a truly clean patch out of it, and thats after 100+ patches, with brushings in between. I'm not just saying this, it is an honest assesment.

Weatherby contracted Howa to build an inexpensive rifle that would bare the Weatherby Name, but much cheaper so that it could produce a product that would "reach" the general public.

Weatherby's Mark V action has NINE locking lugs in the magnum length action, not seven.

R. Weatherby bought the round shoulder design from the the "Powell/Milton Free bore System" company. He did not invent anything, he marketed false ballistics and a fancy "paint job" (just take a look at the ugliest stocks ever made). Extremely long freebore chambers in the Mark 5's and the multilug bolts doomed the rifle, there was no way to make the action tighten up like a two or three lug action. The Vanguards are a better rifle than the Mark 5's.They are another Browning, Howa, S&W, some Winchesters rifle built in Japan. It strikes me as funny that there has never been a Weatherby or Browning factory, the Browning arms Co was started by Glenn Browning 2 years after, J.M. Browning died.
True some old Browns were built in Belgium, those are of much higher quality than the Japanese ones, and some ole Weatherbys were built in Europe, most of those were standard cartridges, many built on a 98 Mauser action.
OK Let the beating and stories begin!! I been beat and lied to before!! LOL :)

 :chuckle:

Bofire, you iz right, Weatherby does have the most freebore I've seen in a production rifle...LOTS & MORE, but lets not believe for a second that nobody else does it, they all do it, EXCEPT custom rigs.

And lets not forget the testing that Roy did for the military, producing ballistics in excess of 6000 fps, all in the 40's (I think, could be off a bit here!).

He sold rifles.......what do you think he was in business for???

:)Don't take me wrong Littletoes, I have no beef with Mr. Weatherby or his guns, but some of the stories and "folk lore" are way too funny.

I am not a fan of the weatherby cartridges since they have the most freebore and essentially throw the bullet to achieve those higher velocities.  I will take a weatherby rifle with a standard cartridge though.
