7MM Rem Mag vs 300 Win Mag
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:19:56 AM »
Getting a new rifle for deer and elk.

Pretty much narrowed down to these two calibers.

Why would I pick the 300 over the 7MM?

Thanks!

If you were ever going to be hunting in griz country, I'd recommend the 300.  I have both, the 300 kicks a little more.  The 7mag is great though.  A lot of the long rangers use the 7mag.
Nothing witty here.... move along.

The only real difference is more recoil with the 300.

Both very deadly! My uncle has killed quite a few elk with his 7MM Mag, and my Father has killed all his elk with the 300 win. Both outstanding game fetchers.

Why would I pick the 300 over the 7MM?

Pick the 300 over the 7 if you want a slightly bigger hole in your game and don't mind slightly more recoil.

I had decided to get a new rifle years ago and came to the same two choices as you.  I ended up going with the .300WM only because I found a rifle in .300WM that I couldn't pass-up.  If that same rifle would have been chambered in 7mm mag, I would have gotten it.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

You can go either route and be just fine. Both are great for what you are looking to do. I have had 7 mags and always end up getting rid of them. I like my 300wm way better and that's just me.

Both are excellent calibers, wider range of bullets with the .30 caliber, slightly less recoil with the 7mm, pick your medicine.....

I love the .30 caliber bullet and I like the .300 but in this case (deer and elk) I would go with the 7mm mag. Why? It's going to do just about anything the .300 will with a flatter trajectory (though negligible at most hunting ranges) and less recoil (which is the biggest selling point in my opinion).

The 7mm is the largest cartridge that made Chuck Hawks All Around Rifle Cartridge list.... primarily due to recoil. http://www.chuckhawks.com/all_around_cartridges.htm

If you truly prefer a .30 caliber...then go with the .300.... you won't be disappointed...again... ultimately the difference is negligible.

I'm too old to shoot hifallutin' calbers like 300 WSM, and I like the ballistics of these two.    I've been a 7MM mag guy my whole life.  Just contemplating a change.....

As mentioned prior, both are excellent cartridges. I have taken deer and elk with both chambering.  I am very fond of the 7mm magnum when it comes to open country Mulies, with the right bullet the 7mm Magnum is a good asset in big canyon elk country. Seeing that both Chamberings are in my top all time five favorite cartridges. I hold the .300 Winchester Magnum one step above the 7 Mag on my list, personally .300 Win Mag recoil doesn't even begin to register on my personal recoil awareness scale. The bullets selection for .30 Cal is HUGE! The .300 Win mag is a very accurate chambering and easy to load for, most loads flat out shoot. I enjoy the two so much, I crossed the two with a custom reamer I had done, it is bases on the .300 Win Mag case necked down to 7mm, less body taper, shoulder angle change and neck dimension lengthened and a "Secret Squirrel" throat.   I saw not to long ago RBros was messing with basically the same thing. I can't recall what his was labeled, mine is the 7.21 SAGE.

If you've been running a 7mm Magnum, no need to change now. Unless you just want another rifle.   A .300 Win mag in elk country is about as AMERICAN as it gets. I can care less how that clown O'Connor felt about it.

7mm fan here.
My 30+ year hunting partner is a 300 fan.
We both have 2 each.
Neither one of us have ever had an issue with animals hitting the dirt.

Interesting....is that why you asked PTG for my reamer print after my original post?

The 7RM built properly will outshoot the 300WM in longrange.  In most hunting distances it really is a wash.  The 7RM has less recoil, the 300WM makes a bigger hole.  Take whichever you get the best deal on.

I was doing the math on the throat, asked for several wildcat reamer throat dimensions. Your targeting the 180's VLD's. I was looking for a happy medium to work with the 160 Acccubond as my first choice and possibly the 180's. Besides the 6.5-284 Neck is a perfect length and one doesn't need one longer. Other than the throat, your knocking on the Mashburns door, kind of like a Bill Alexander thing. :chuckle:

It's close to a mashburn but more capacity.  The neck is different along with our throat design.  I played with the mashburn a lot and the data it provided helped design my case.  Trust me, it's definitely not a copy of the mashburn.  The throat design also has a patent pending on it.  Part of the reason it's proprietary.

I have used both alot. When I have chronoed factory loads I have never had a 7mmrem mag come close to the published specs. I think any difference in felt recoil is more in gun design than cartridge. generally speaking a 7mm shoots a 150 grain at the same trajectory as a 300 shoots a 180. My 300 loves winchester failsafe, published at I think 2960 fps, chrono out of mine a 3025 avg. deviation of about 25 fps.
either will kill any animal in North America handily, I will never bad mouth a guy hunting with a 7mm however I shoot a 300.

In the eyes of the reamer builders " Proprietary  " is a simple is saying " Proprietary  " and POW! Proprietary is typed right there on the reamer print. It's fun to play with different cartridges and bullet diameters. Angles, throats and such but in the big picture, it has been done so much by so many that many are close to another or performs so close to other Chamberings that the difference doesn't really matter. But then again we wouldn't have horse races if everyone had the same horse, what fun would it be on the big firearms track if we were all running the same chit.

I have both, the only advantage I see one over the other is the availability of the 300 win mag ammo over 7mm mag.
More places, have more 300 win mag options.
Both are great calibers, buy one of each

Great advice.....   and thanks all.

I decided to just buy another 7MM so that I don't have to keep track of yet another caliber in the safe.

Happy shooting to all!
