School me on AR's
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:53:09 PM »
I have wanted an AR for some time but know really nothing about them. Which is good, which is bad, what to look for and what to a void, etc....

All I know is, I want one I could take big game hunting (deer) if I want to, and I want it camo....

I know Olympic has some models that I can get in .243 WSSM and .25 WSSM.

Looking to yote hunt with it also and both .243 and .25 cal have small grained bullets that I can reload for it.

What do I need to Know  :dunno:

There are lots of choices out there. Not very many come in camo. You can always get a black one and send it in and have it dipped. Your cals in the ar-15's are going to be the 6.8/6.5 and 300 blackout. The ar-10 you can get into a lot more. A fine choice is the r-15 by remington. 243/7mm-08/308. I run the 7mm-08. I am finishing my 6.5 grendel tomorrow. Bushmaster/dpms and remington are all sister companies and all make fine guns.

Here's a list of calibers for the AR 15. Using one lower22 204 ruger 223/5.56x45 5.7x28 223wsm 243wsm 25wsm 6.5 grendel 6.8spc 7.62x39 30AR 450bushmaster 458scocom
50beowulf. The ballistics on the grendel are quite impressive. Worth a look imo  ;)

This is a AR cartridge that might fit your needs, I have been thinking about getting a upper done in a 6mm AR Turbo.

It all depends on how deep you want to dive into the murky AR pool. :o

The 6.5 Grendel is a excellent cartridge and it's simplicity is attractive compared to the process involved in other AR uppers. Brass and dies are easily available, no fire forming. 25 round mag capacity if need be, 25 in the mag and one in the pipe make it a duel purpose two or four legged varmint package. :)

I did one on a 18" Alexander Arms barrel, turned down to lighten it up, shortened to 17" and threaded 5/8-24 for a suppressor. My brother did his on a 16" Alexander M4 barrel and he has taken Mulies out to 496 yards with his. One shot stop with a 120 Nosler BT.

Mine has been through several different configurations but the same barrel. The  A-Max Factory " Sissy " Hornady ammo is SPOOKY accurate through both barrels. Another excellent source for quality Grendel ammo is at Precision Firearms.

Nice AR Biggerhammer
Earlier in the year I was looking @ building a 6.8 ar platform (my first) for deer & coyotes. After stumbling onto the 6.5 grendel and reading up on it, I haven't looked back. It's just what I wanted in a firearm long, hard hitting an accurate. With practice I'm looking forward to hitting a 6in pie plate at 500 yards. I have all the parts except one of the important ones the "BARREL". Waiting since 03-20-12.

Who did you order your barrel from? A great barrel at a reasonable price is the Blackhole Weaponry barrel in 6.5 LBC. The Grendel and the 6.5 LBC are one in the same. My brothers deer he shot at almost 500 yards was with a 6.5 Grendel barrel and a loaded cartridge with the head stamp of 6.5 LBC.

Alexander has really been lacking on delivering barrels even close to their projected delivery dates. I know guys who have been waiting over a year.

I know people waiting as well. I found a used one for a great price and the guy still has it. I just don't want 2 of them. I went with the 20" on mine and it should be a perfect blend for me. I talked to the guys at AA and they were not very friendly and seemed to care less about getting a order from me. So I went with a saber, I cant wait tell tomorrow!!! Scope will be 2-3 weeks and ammo about a week so I just get to cuddle with it for now. That is the first time I have bought any factory center fire ammo in 2 years. Good thing I got hooked up with hornady this year as well :IBCOOL: Much cheaper to feed the beast :IBCOOL: The brass was only like .20 cents cheaper then loaded. So I just ordered a bunch of loaded shells and dies.

Props to hornady for hooking me up. I am a big nosler fan as most know but hornady has been great to work with so far.

I'll sell you my 458 Socom Rock River complete upper, never been fired, Hornady New Demension dies, 3 boxes of Corbon 300 grain HP and a box of projectiles for $1300. Then just buy a lower and you'll have a nice killing machine......

Who makes the best lowers?

Not sure if I want to go stripped lower, or assembled lower.

Should I go forged?

I'm ready to build me an AR, before they go with another Brady bill or something worse even.

Pretty well sold on the Grendell too.

A lot of them are so very close in quality. There is no need to have to go to a forged lower. I switched to spikes on my last few builds. If you do anything build your lower and buy a upper.

Building the lower is the easiest part of a build.  I used the J&S cheapy for mine.  Can't really see the reason to go forged on a lower.

If you are looking for the best lower, try Seekins Precision ( Glen is a good friend of mine, but he does make premium stuff!)
http://www.seekinsprecision.com/
If you want an AR-15 sized rifle as opposed to an AR-10 sized rifle, the 6.5G/ .264LBC round is a good one for shots to ~300 or so on deer sized game.
If you reload there are several chambering that fit the AR-15 platform that will do the trick.
If you go to the AR-10 sized platform, there are a few in 243, 260, 6.5 Creedmore, and 308.

Hard to beat Mega Arms when it comes to billet uppers and lowers and their local. They make top end monolithic uppers at a reasonable price considering the machining that goes into them. The Grendel is a whole different creature than the 6.8 SPC. Some who have posted here learned that the hard way. :chuckle: The Grendel is well capable of taking deer beond 300 yards. I don't care what No# someone goes by. I've watched it done.
