Mosin Nagant
« on: July 27, 2012, 04:51:23 PM »
Has anyone hunted with a Mosin Nagant or know someone that did?
I'm going to be using mine this year, I'm gonna order different kinds of ammo to try out. I'm also setting it up as a scout rifle. I want to zero the scope in using the rounds I plan to take hunting.

What's your guys' Mosin look like, what scope and rounds do you use with it?

I've only fired surplus through mine but it's a pretty fun rifle to shoot and relatively accurate. If I were to use some good hunting bullets, do a scout conversion and re-crown the barrel it I would think mine to be adequate for anything in North America.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Yea, I can't decide if I want to use the 180g or 203g soft points. There are a few different companys that sell them but I don't know how to decide which brand to get and use.
I found a few scopes I like for my scout set up. I already have the scout mount on it from brass stacker.
Haven't thought about getting the barrel recrowned tho, I'll look into it.

Yeah, no problem.  I used mine (successfully) last year with handloaded 180 gr, 303 softpoints & H4350 using open sights.  Scope makes it even better & with factory ammo - just pick what you like & wh.at shoots well.

Thats great, you got pics of the wounds on the animal?

I'm gonna order some different hunting loads, but  "what shoots well" will be hard to figure out I think, since my baseline is very low with the surplus corrosive ammo.

They probably both would, 7.62x54R has a pretty mild recoil.

Ended up getting a Simmon 2-6x32 and some S&B 180grain Soft points. Already got the mount on the rifle. Scope should arrive wednesday. I'll have it zeroed in and ready to go for my hunt this weekend. :)

good luck with the scope mount, a lot of chinese made very poor quality scope mount stuff made for those rifles. I only ever used one with iron.. FWIW I use the 90$ simmons 2x pistol scope on my .308 scout scoped rifles- with good results.

I got this mount http://brassstacker.com/Mosin-Nagant-9130-See-Thru-Scout-Scope-Mount-9130-SSM.html
It is very nice quality. Very sturdy, I don't have doubts about it.
Also glad you have good experience with Simmons, especially on a .308
The one I ordered is normally $210, but I got it on sale for $140with shipping.
