Latest Hornady reloading manual/book question? .338 RUM
« on: July 30, 2012, 07:21:48 PM »
I don't have the latest Hornady book and my searches came up empty. My question is:

Does the latest Hornady book have load data for the .338 Remington Ultra Magnum, using the 285gr Hornady?

If so, what is the starting and max load along with the suggested COAL?

For H1000, RL-25, Retumbo or RL-22? those are the powders I have available, I'm almost out of IMR 7828

Thanks.

Guess I could wait until tomorrow to get my hands on the book, I would like to do some reloading this evening.

Thanks, I figured the bullet was new enough that it may not be in the current book?

send them a email and tell them its not in the 8th edition and you need reloading data on it and see what they say.

I contacted Hornady and they have no load data for it, so I guess I'll sit down when I have the time and do the math for a starting load.

What powder do you want? The 285 Hornady is listed in Load From A Disk, so I can run the numbers for you.

IMR 7828 looks pretty good. 86.3gr is at 95% case volume and shows 2850fps at 58K PSI from a 28" barrel with an OAL of 3.600. 90.9gr is the max at just under 64K PSI and 3000 fps.

RL-25 looks like it would give very similar results.

Hey thanks York! How about RL-25 and Retumbo out of a 9.5 twist 30" barrel. Min and max load, if you don't mind.

Here are the numbers from Load From a Disk. The trick with this program is that it works on case volume. It won't calculate compressed charges, only up to 100% case volume. It looks like Retumbo is a little too slow for the RUM case because you'll hit 100% case capacity before the pressures peak. You should be able to work up slowly from the max charges the program is giving. Here's what I came up with for a 30" barrel with Retumbo, and a 3.600" OAL:

285 Hornady BTHP

Start load: 86.5gr @ 50895 PSI (95% case volume)
Max load 90.9gr @ 55815 PSI (100% case volume)

Load from a disk doesn't give data for Retumbo and the 225 Accubond. The program says that it's too slow to be ideal. I did find Hodgdon's data for the 225 Partition and Retumbo:

Start load: 97.0 gr @ 52800 PSI
Max load: 103.0 gr @ 61100 PSI (compressed load)

Hope these help.

Andrew
