I've got a nearly finished pointing dog who's got some habits we need to work through on some wild birds who won't let him cheat like pen-raised birds. He's smart, he knows the difference in training and hunting. Ideally, we would head to the dry side of the state every weekend, but that's a no-go.
I'm looking for some options, and I'm thinking grouse may be a good solution in between trips to eastern WA. I've heard there are many grouse on Fort Lewis... I live on the post, would like to think I've spent long enough in the field here, but have only seen one, maybe I'm in the wrong TA's?
Went up to Aberdeen Tree Farm over last weekend, but didn't spot a lot of "grousy" terrain on the few roads that were open to driving. Have maps for Pe Ell Tree Farm too, but ran out of time.
The hunting is really secondary to getting him on birds, this is our last fall in WA. The point of it all is, I don't take the shot and he doesn't get his bird unless he does the whole point-flush-shot-fall-game sequence perfectly. I'm thankful for as much (or little) info/direction/details as you are willing to share. Thanks in advance.
