CRAP! Have to road hunt for bear tonight
« on: August 03, 2012, 11:36:43 AM »
Got permission to go out for a few hours this evening, but only if I take the 8 and 5 year olds and only if they stay in the truck.  I was told under no circumstances were they to be used as bait.  I told her of course not, thanks to short sighted people like her, baiting was illegal in WA.

Anyway, now I have to road hunt for bear.  Any tips for this way of hunting bear?  I know more than a few bears are shot on logging roads every year and that bear like to use roads as, well, roads.  I don't think I'm even going to break out the camo and dirty it up.  Hopefully I can find a nice roadside clearcut and squeal on the fawn in distress call and see what happens.

I would say park the truck at least a few hundred yards shy of the clear cut and walk to it.

If in an area with good visibility and lots of cuts, driving to vantage points and glassing is probably the best you are going to do.

Park. Wait until kids fall asleep. Call. Repeat. Seems like it may work. Never done it though. For the record, all hunting advice I give with the exception of things like "but that was a really dumb idea, idk why i did that" is mostly me just thinking aloud. Hopefully I get firsthand knowledge this year.

So, not to rain on the parade but based on your constraints, What if you pull up on a clear cut and whack one down in the bottom? How do you leave the kids in the rig then?

:yeah:

And I'd take the kids with me to recover it.  She just doesn't want me dragging them all over the woods looking for a bear.

It's funner to get them out.... I took my 5 year old son four at the time.... His 4 year old friend...... His 3 year old brother... My 9 year old daughter.... Her 9 year old friend..... And my buddy..... He went one way.... I went the other with all the kids in tow behind me....  :chuckle: Not thinking it would be much more then a hike for me...   No stick was safe from being thrown or stomped on....   :chuckle:  I've also never found that many M&M's on the floor of my truck before..... When we got to the clear cut a mile in I had them stay back so I could take a look..... I could still here the kids talking as I spotted a lone bear in a depression (luckily cause the sound of their voices carried over the bear off the ridge) One 180 yard shot and it was down.... Sure shut them up for a second until they all came running up and flushed a grouse scaring them into a yell.... Then two deer popped out and ran over the ridge..... They had never seen anything like it.... And they still talk about it and ask when I can take them again..... My buddy and I had to take turns towing them out on the bear on the game cart..... And yes he was a little pissed....   Once my foot gets a little better I'll at least have my son and daughter out on that same ridge in a week or two.... Maybe my wife to....

That's a funny story right there, you just never know what will happen in the woods.

I wouldn't use the kids as bait but would they be opposed to stuffing their pockets full of bacon and grease and walking 20 yards in front of you :chuckle:

If you get a bear with your kids present they will have had a moment in their lives to remember!  Even if you don't they will enjoy all the wildlife sightings!

I will be taking my five year old son with me at some point this season. I can point to the bears at cabelas and he can tell me if it's a polar bear, brown bear or black bear. He is also very entertained with a pair of bonoculars

That's good. Make him spot your bear, and then you can blast him  :chuckle:

Bah.  What a waste.  didn't see a single animal of any type move.  In the complete wrong spot.  Lots of unripe blackberries but no tracks and no scat.  sucked

Yea I bet it was quite a wast of time. Being out with your two young children looking for bears. Man that must have really sucked. :dunno:
By the way. Sitting glassing the "right" clearcuts from a landing is a very productive way of hunting bears.
