I've been reading some posts talking about calling in bears. What kind/style/brand of call are you guys using?

Must be a secret ;-) I hear the break-squeal of a newer model Suburban hauling a half-ton of doughnuts bring em in pretty good! Ask this guy!!! http://www.king5.com/news/Eatonville-man-pleads-guilty-to-17-counts-of-bear-baiting-162670296.html?c=n

I use bearmanricks calls,RnR calls..I like both the open and closed reed calls..dont expect bears to run in as often as coyotes..Im a fan of the smaller rabbit sounds, and use them as fawn sounds also...

We have a couple of great call makers on this site. Contact Bearmanric or Rainshadow and let them know what you want to do and they will set you up. I have not tried Phelps calls, but I am sure they will work just fine as well.

Depending on the situation I use cow/calf calls, fawn distress and a variety of rabbit distress sounds.

There is a ton of calling info here if you use the search feature and there is more info at www.callingbears.com

Lets talk conditions… what are the best weather conditions, and best time of the day to hunt bear? We have a few hot days right now, I’m guessing first and last light they move more? What have you guys seen as best conditions?

The bears I've called in have been around 9-11 am. I've also shot at bears @ noon and 90 degrees too.

Yep. Basically all hours here as well. Lots of hot days and some cool days, but never in the rain.

Love Ricks calls. Just don't toot on them expecting a coyote or bobcat. He forewarned me that something bigger is the only thing that will be approaching with the call set I got. Haven't been *censored* enough to see if he's right while I'm hunting alone.
