High Alpine Buck
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:01:24 AM »
Not much of a story here...mostly got lucky.  We (myself, Dad and Brother) hiked in on Friday.  I hunted the next morning and evening only seeing a few doe.  Decided to head into a newer area Sunday morning to try and change my luck...just more does.  Sunday evening took me back to the normal hunting area where I glassed most of the evening with no luck.  But that changed on my way back to camp when a buck and I crested the same small ridge.  With a three-point minimum, I quickly tried to count points...but with the trees and shadows from the sunset, I just couldn't confirm before he bolted back over the ridge.  I quickly dropped down and crested the ridge to find him about a 100yds away on a small bench looking at me broadside.  Binoculars up...one, two and three.  Gun up, took the shot with my new Ruger American Rifle 270win.  The buck ran another 100yds and went down.  Harvested my first high buck (24" 3x3) within 200 yds of our camp.  Big thanks to my Brother for helping me pack him out...now we're even

Congrats on a wonderful memory made and a beautiful trophy!!
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.
