Kayak Point (Marine Area 8) question on crabbing / bottom fishing from kayak

Howdy,

So I have a new boat in my humble armada.  It is sort of a kayak/canoe combo (called a NuCanoe) and so far I really like it.  Have taken it out on lakes the past couple of weekends but I am now wondering about the Sound and specifically Kayak Point which is north of Tulalip and south of Stanwood.

My question is what advice does anyone have for dropping pots in this area from a kayak and what pointers would you give for fishing this area?  I have heard you can catch flounder, sole and sea perch.  Flounder is good eating and if sea perch tastes anything like yellow perch than I would chow that as well.

From looking at the map I got at Outdoor Emporium on "Puget Sound - North" it seems as though the water gets very deep in that area very fast (as in 10 -> 40 -> well over 150 feet)..... don't won't to lose my pots as I have yet to get a fishfinder on the canoe.  Does it make sense to drop the pots fairly close to shore?

The North end is shallow.  Just make sure the pot hits the bottom before you let go of the line.

There will be a million and one people at Kayak Point....just ask someone what the depth is And just look at where the other pots are too.

Garmin Bluechart, great product.  With that on your GPS you don’t need a depth finder.

Well, got one good keeper today.  Thanks again CP and Kola16 for the tips.... I still have more to learn but an early dinner is about to be served.  There were people out there today digging sand shrimp on the shore and were going to use them to catch flounder.  That sounds cool... I still have yet to locate good flounder grounds out at Kayak Point and they said you can also catch (and release) Sea Run Cutthroats there too... will have to see if I can get into some of those.

I think I am going to wait till I get a 12Volt battery for my new fish finder before heading back out there though.... mainly so I know how deep it is out there... it really does drop off quick.  I let one of my pots hit bottom before letting go, or so I thought, and then when I looked for my buoy I was like ?!!?     

Not sure if it slipped off the edge of something or what...

LOL..... thankfully I got it at low tide this morn.

Sweet! There are a lot of flounder to catch there at just about any depth. Someone could help you out with that at the Hunt-Wa crab outing if you come http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,118517.0.html Sea-runs aren't to hard to catch there either. Oh, and humpies will be there soon enough too

Drive a little further and the north end of camano island has better crabbing

I second what Kola said, come to the crab outing. A lot of good people will be there and fun will be had by all. You will gain a lot of knowledge also.
