Scouting question
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:42:03 PM »
Scout this hot weather yes/no?

Best time to scout hot weather early morning late afternoon?

Will the patterns I notice now hold over to early September?

Just out of curiosity not related to scouting: Why aren't there any hunting shows based on Blackies? Is it just because whitetails are easier to hunt (more predictable) or is it simply due to the fact that most of the "hunters" on hunting programming are from the south?

I know I saw this on here before but can't remember; what is a good reference book for beginning blacktail hunters?

The deer I see around where you're hunting (If you're hunting where I showed you) are staying consistant, even in this heat.  Stick to evening.  some movement in the mornings but, they're coming out at dusk.  This next week is supposed to be 15-20 degrees cooler too.  Probably closer to what it'll be in early Sept.

I think the hunting show question is that blackie racks aren't what other species are.  Harder to hunt them, harder to get a hunt on film, majority of the country doesn't/won't hunt them.  Bottom line, there's no sponsor money in hunting blackies on TV

I asked that same question to a bunch of different tv shows and the people at mossyoak. I can only remember what mossyoak told me and it was that only 5% of there market consists of blacktail hunters so pretty much why bother.

I think you nailed it. Most of the shows are made in the south and midwest. My whitetails around my house have been doing the same thing for months. I just started feeding them. We'll see if they stick around for a few more weeks.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Thanks again for the help J. I am going to hunt the areas you pointed out to me. I have only been able to get out there once since you showed me around and it was in the Middle of the afternoon, didn't see any critters but got a good lay of the land.

I figured the market for blacktail hunters was a lot smaller than that of the whitetail hunters but as a new hunter it would be great to have another tool to learn tips/tricks/tactics for my hunt.

 :yeah:

Whitetail deer is America's deer. There just aren't that many blacktail hunters so if someone focuses on them it's going to be a niche.  There are a few videos out there that you can find.

Don't worry though...whitetail get ignored in the NW. It's easy to get a 170 whitetal buck in a national magazine if your in the south or even midwest but they usually aren't interested in NW whitetails unless they are true giants because the NW whitetail market is so small compared to other parts of the nation.

If you can manage to get out here an hour or 2 before dusk and stay until dark, you'll see a lot more.  Since you don't have any gear with you, bring binoculars and climb a tree on the edge of a cut and watch.

There is an old book about blacktail deer and hunting them written by Boyd Iverson.......it is a great read and will give you much insight in the blacktails life.
