So, I can order doe tags for $75 apiece and just go shoot them?
yes, there are some surplus tags available, mostly white tail. they went on sale yesterday.  The only thing else you need is the hunting access enhancment thingy for $10.  You can get up to 7 surplus doe tags

Bucks and bulls in the southwest corner. No precise area nailed down yet, but hope to get over there every other month or so til we go and nail down an area. Probably pick up some meat tags also. Im thinking of going over either this year or next with surplus tags. We'll see, tho.

Im thinking about heading over with the wife to put a little meat in the freezer. Of the tags that are remaining, what areas would you guys recommend for harvesting a couple of does?
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.

Yeah this sounds good to me too.  I am going to have to look into an area for some does and take my wife and son.  I think that would be a great time.  I have been to MT twice before with a friends family we hunted the Dillion area.  I would also be interted to know what people are saying about a good area to take the wife and kids that has the does tags left.  thanks

Looks like all are bought up around Dilln area. there looks to be a ton still for 425, which is sw of Helena.  There just wasnt as many this yr because of winter kill in 2010.  i was online and got my surplus at 4 am on the 6th when they went on sale.

I got 4 tags at 4am on the 6th for area 640, which is the top right hand corner of nowhere out on the prarie.  There were 344 muledeer doe tags available at that time.  I don't know if any are left now.

Yes, $75 bucks and doe tag is yours.  Plus, you need to buy one time conservation tag.  We did an archery hunt over near Lincoln, MT one year to fill the freezer and the doe tags were over-the-counter in Sept., plus this area had a limit of 5 does.  So, we went over and harvested one at a time.  I took four of them in a week ($75 bucks each).

Are the first numbers in the column the gmu number?  I was trying to match it to their map and it wasn't making sense???

So where do you start? Never been to MT but looks like there ares till some tags left. Where in the state would be a good place for a DIY hunt for some whitetail does? Not looking for honey holes but can someone point me to a GMU or region?

Pretty much anywhere there is surplus tags is a good area for wt does, alot of deer equals a lot of tags.  about the only factor limiting success is the amount of public land to hunt.   Go to Montana Fish and Game website, and open the Hunt planner, there you can look at each region, and it will show you where state and blm land is, from there you cand select a species on the menu hit the refresh button, and it will highlight where they are found in that unit.  Its that simple.  If your not sure how to find the tags online, give thema call and they will hook you up...theyre relly friendly

Is the western part of the state near the ID border going to be any good for whitetail or do I need to push farther east?
