 Look under the Rattling Whitetails thread. Most of the bucks I posted were from western MT. I'll be there again this year (Lord willing) hunting with my son and daughter. There's definately some great hunting in the western timber.

Anyone hunted the 411/412 near Lewistown, MT?

I grew up there. Haven't hunted it since 98' but a buddy of mine tells me it's not the same. Got hit will blue tongue couple years ago.

Lots of private land till you get up in the hills.  Do some knocking on doors and I'm sure some farmer would let ya hunt.

I keep saying I'm going back for a hunt but just never get to it.


Anyone know if the Missouri River breaks is a draw for archery elk or OTC? I could look at regs too. Just being lazy.

So where do you start? Never been to MT but looks like there ares till some tags left. Where in the state would be a good place for a DIY hunt for some whitetail does? Not looking for honey holes but can someone point me to a GMU or region?

I just saw this post. If you are looking for does you may have to push further east. They've cut back in the western side. But if you get a buck tag, see my other post.

Is the western part of the state near the ID border going to be any good for whitetail or do I need to push farther east?

There are some amazing wt bucks there, seen many along I-90, just no surplus tags.... Gonna have to go east at this point in the game

Not sure if your talking about on the I90 corridor or not but the whole bitterroot valley is full of whitetail deer. I live in Hamilton now and see several bucks a day not even looking for them.

Am I missing something? I thought the surplus A tags were good for any deer in area of the state that is open to hunting. Last time i checked, there was nearly 2000 surplus A tags still.

Yeah, the A tags are good almost anywhere if ya wanna shell out 593 bucks.  we were talking B tags.

Eburg was asking about wt doe tags close to the ID/MT border, and i was stating that there were nosurplus doe tags in ther.  Somewhere in the thread we got talking about nice bucks in western montana, and it got all jumbled somewhere    But yes, i do agree its a good place for nice whitetail/mulie bucks if ya wanna get a leftover A tag

Somebody should snag the 398-82 elk B license.  There's some pretty good elk country in the HD 360/362 area and had a 100% success rate in 2011 for what was the 398-80 then and is now busted up by dates.
