.338 WM question
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:58:43 PM »
Ok, I traded a guy for a .338 WM the other day, and was wondering what some of your thoughts were on ammo. I have been looking at the Hornady Superformance, but I have seen some negative comments in reviews, particularly on magnum loads. Don't plan on any dangerous game hunting, just elk.

I had one and I bought the cheapest ammo out there. Just buy a good elk cartridge because that's a lot of thumping power going down range. I actually have a box old 338 loaded ammo you can have. It's Winchester 225 gn SP, 20 of 'em. Just figure out how you pay for shipping from me and you can have them. Where are you located ?

I shoot 225's out of mine and love em. As said before, lots of thump going down range. 200's and 210's are used pretty regular by some folks as well with devastating results as well. What model rifle?

Hey Campmeat, thanks to the offer, I'll take'um. I live in Vancouver WA. I'll sent you a private message with a UPS shipper number.
Woodchuck, It's an old model Ruger M77. I was looking for one to go with my old model M77 .270 Winchester. I've put a lot of venison and one bull elk in the freezer with it.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Federal Premium load with nosler partitions in it.  I did shoot clear through a bull twice with generic Federal 225 grain loads though.  It put a lot of hurt on him and he only went a little ways before cashing it in.

I have a M77 and it likes the blue box Federal ammo in 225gr. I did try the Premium Federal 225gr tsx and it rally liked them.
going to use that hopefully on a bear hunt and an elk.

I handload 225 Accubonds...  they work amazing..  I have also worked up 210 partition loads that are just flat screaming and knock elk flat..  they leave the barrel at 2950 fps...

I reload because of the savings... those  Nosler bullets in Federal ammunition is 65-80.00 a box.  I reload and get as good if not better performance for less than 30.00 a box..  and I still get the premium bullets.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.
