7mm Roy build on Savage LA
« on: August 06, 2012, 06:32:47 PM »
I think I want to build a 7mm Weatherby Mag.......It will be used for deer and elk. I was wanting to use the 140 AB. Any  and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Ken

If I were to do it, I would drop the coin on a custom reamer. Have the reamer done to square up the shoulder and ditch that double radius along with a proper throat and get rid of the free bore.

So this would work out to be what round? Sorry, I'm not sure what this means.

I didn't have a cartridge in particular in mind other than the 7mm Roy you mentioned. I thought about building one years ago and after tinkering with the idea And talking to Dave Kiff at PTG. I felt I could improve it's accuracy and performance by having a reamer done that would give it a 35 or 40 degree shoulder and have it properly throated for my bullet of choice and get rid of the free bore the Roy cartridges were based on. It's not needed with the modern/improvements in powders we have now that were not available back then along with a much improved modern bullet selection. With such a reamer one would just load a standard 7mm Weatherby cartridge and fire form it with the first shot, there would be the slightest increase in powder capacity but now you would have a clean shoulder and out the door with the factory double radius.

Wow, I understand now, but never experience what and how to do this. I was trying to stay away from a wildcat.

Then chamber up in 7mm Roy and blast away. 24 or 26" inch 9 twist should do you just fine.

Would you strictly hand load for it?  Maybe a 7STW?

This would pretty much be a 7mm-375 Ruger. I've been trying to convince somebody to build one for a while now. :chuckle: All I want is for somebody else to spend the time and money to work up loads so that I can use their data. Is that too much to ask? ;)

The 7mm Weatherby is a great round, but brass and ammo are a little on the expensive side.

Do you have an idea what sort of rifle you want? As in a lite weight hunting rifle, heavy long range gun, or something in between.

York-
I at one point was thinking I wanted to do this in a 7 ultra, but the COL is to long, same with the STW. How long would the 7mm-375 be? My mag well sits at 3.44. I would like to keep it a repeater and I would like to keep it a med weight hunting rifle.

Not York, but you should be able to keep it right at that length.  Make a dummy round and send it in to have the reamer made.  The ones I have built were right 3.44-3.55 with a 180 Berger.  A different bullet would be shorter oal, like a 160 accubond or something of that same shape.

thanks rbros, but that is way to much for me to do...think I better keep with a standard round.
