Early Season

Just wondering if anyone does worth a darn in the early september seasons for both ducks and geese. Haven't tried it yet but I don't to drive out there if there isn't much flyin.

Youth duck in Sept.  The kids I take out, usually hammer the ducks.  And we typically do very well on the geese as well.  They decoy very easy in many cases and we hunt in shorts, so what more can you ask for.

Still a youth, just doesn't fall under the 15 and under for duck.  But he is good to go on early goose.  No age restriction as long as they have taken Hunter Ed or received a bye for the first year give 10 years of age or older.  Does that fly with you Ned?

No, he asked about DUCKS and geese.
Those are open to youth on the weekend of the 22nd.
If he's able to drive he doesnt qualify for the youth hunt.
The op never commented that he was a youth, thats your guess.

Actually guys I'm 15 and I will be getting my permit soon so I am still a youth and I will be driving, but with my dad in the passenger seat helping me along the way. so what I said earlier does make sense doesn't it Ned? Anyways, thanks for the replies they helped a lot.

The youth hunt in september is a must! take advantage of it while you can - some of my best hunts were during the youth season shooting blue-wing teal and geese when I was still eligible. The birds are generally willing to decoy and the number of hunters in the field is low. Get after them!

Early season can rock.... they decoy easier, and come in to calls easy.
But, not as many ducks.
There are typically tons of teal, sprigs, and Gadwalls, but not many mallards.
Typically, you're only hunting locally born ducks in the early season, with the exception of teal.

Unless.... you hunt salt water. A lot of the smaller species of ducks migrate early, and the pacific flyway is full of 'em.

Some guys say they can only shoot Long tailed ducks and Harlaquins in the early season.

But, all that being said, I never go early.
Teal are fun and all, but....  7 greenwings weigh about as much as 2 mallards. lol.
I would rather wait and go in November and shoot 7 greenHEADS a day, vs. 7 greenWINGS a day.
