New Gun
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:19:42 PM »
Good afternoon everyone, I need some opinion on purchasing a rifle. looking at the remington 700 sps in 7mm rem mag, i would like to know if it is an accurate gun out of the box. Are there any other brands of rifle chambered in 7mm that will be accurate out of the box for under $600?

Savage 111  I think they can be had at Bi Mart for $429 with a 3x9 Nikon Prostaff scope.  Worth looking at for sure.

I would think that any bolt action from a major maker, Remington, Savage, Howa, Weatherby Vanguard, or Tikka will be an accurate hunting rifle.  If it isn't it is an anomaly manufactures try to build good rifles.

If your planning to do some long range work with the rifle I would stick to a Rem or Sav as there are more after market long range accesories and gunsmiths experienced in working with them.

Plan on buying a decent scope to go with the rifle you pick to get the most out of it,  expect to pay from $150. on up for a good scope.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

How about under 500?

Buy the rifle, keep it forever, in a couple years replace the scope when you can afford it.

i have alway liked remingtons to build off of. lots of upgrades out there for them. but out of the box performance is okay. cant go wrong with a savage 110 or maybe a thompson center venture. great triggers, free floated stocks and the venture has a box mag, which i like.

At bi mart you can get a savage 111 with the 3x9 nikon prostaff for 429.00, you can get the remington 700 adl for 389.00 with a cheap remington scope on it. i just think out of the box performance the savage is better. it has the accu stock, accu trigger and a drop floor plate. both guns will shoot good but the remington needs some work. change the stock, scope and the trigger on the remington and i would take it but you are looking a more money. as for the vanguard its a good shooter but still had to have the trigger done on it and the stock free floated by my gunsmith.

cant go wrong with the remington 700. It shoots great right out of the box...  Never had any need for anything other than a remington... As far as the trigger pull on a remington you can adjust it with a small screw driver if its too stiff and there is nothing wrong with the stock.. I bought a 700 in 300 rum in 05 went to the range to break in the barrel once i shot a box through it i was touching holes at 100 yards everytime... I have yet to see savage do that!

where on the site did you go to find the savage with prostaff scope. all i see is the savage with bushnell scope and its for $379 but it doestnt say whether it has the accu trigger/accu stock.

May want to look at the Browning A-bolts. I see them under $600 in the Composite stalker. Good rifles.
