Whats the best gun deal you've made at a pawn shop?
« on: August 09, 2012, 11:26:53 PM »
I've only bought one rifle at a pawn shop, but it was at a fire sale price. ( The guy that pawned it needed $ bad)It's been ~12 years so I don't remember all the details, but it was a 6.5X284 built on a Remington action.
I did get some long  kills on Prairie dogs with it. If memory serves, 720 and 727 yards were the longest.
I also won the first local long range match with it after fixing a few of the problems it had.
What's been your best "pawn shop' gun deal(s)?

Ya needed a custom to start you off, that hacked together 25-06 of yours  wasn't cutting it. The guy that had it built, built it right. heard all about it. :) If I recall right, the guy that got the smoking deal was the guy that bought the new bedded McMillan A4 you sold off it for 325.00 bucks because you didn't know what it was worth. :o 715 yards Jimmy, I was sitting right beside you ranging and calling your shots. you can thank me later for getting you started. :chuckle:  :chuckle:

I got a .380 for $150, brand new. That is the only gun that I have bought from a pawn shop.

Ruger #1 458 Winchester $625.00.  If memory serves me correct that was 1983.  The one and only time I've ever stepped foot in a pawn shop.

A friend and I went together and bought seven Savage 1899's and 99's from a pawn shop for $1000.  He kept an 1899A in 25-35 and I kept a 1899B in 25-35 the rest sold for $200-$300.  We both ended up with highly collectable Savage 1899's for free.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Four or five years ago I picked up a Savage 111 in 30-06 for $200.  It was (and is) in very good condition and shoots less than moa @100 yds.

I gave up looking at guns at my local pawn shop. The owner seems to think they are all made of gold and that everyone that walks in the door is an idiot. Don't know how he ever turns any inventory.

most of the "deals" i have seen are on odd caliber stuff, and it seems that many pawn shops i have been into price thier stuff way too high.. they are open to some wheeling and dealing tho.  :twocents:

I paid 85.00 for a Rem. 870 Wingmaster.  Someone had tried to saw off the barrel, it was not square, had not been de burred, and the stock was full of Brass Upholstery tacks.. someone seems tried to decorate the damn thing...

It took me about 12 total hours worth of work, refinishing stock, cleaning up the barrel, etc....

It shot great.....

bought my .270 savage, left handed with scope for 290.  Other left handed rifles of equal, lesser or greater caliber at this pawn shop, other pawn shops and even brand new ones were over 200 dollars more, so i got a good deal and very nice rifle.

Thats a great deal Plat.  Not a lot of LH rifles out there, i was once told that 2% of rifles were made LH. All the LH rifles i looked at were with in spitting distance of new but had an old scope.

The pawn shop in Bellingham by the airport asks more than new prices in many cases on there guns. I looked at some other items as well.  Why would someone buy from a pawn shop if it's only a $10-20 dollar difference vs. new in many cases.  Don't know how some of these guys stay in business.

About a year ago, I picked up a very cosmetically rough Ruger Model 77 in .300 Win mag.  Bluing worn, stock scratched and finish worn off in spots, but had a Leupol Vari-X II 3x9 and a nice bore.  With sales tax it was less than $375.00 out the door.

The scope was boggered-up and would not adjust for zero, so sent it back to Leupold and in a weeks time it was back, completeley replaced the adjustment mechanisim and a new front lens glass.

I sanded the stock and refinished it with polyurethane and cleaned up the barreled action and painted it with flat black industrial metal paint (like is used on big equipment).

After figuring in the cost to mail the scope to Leupold, and the polyurethane, (I already had the paint), when I sold it I got enough out if it to go to Cabela's and get a NIB Remington 700 in .300 Win mag and still had a little over $10.00 left after sales tax on the Remington.

Had a friend that was doing some remodel work for a Pawn shop owner back in the late 90's and picked up a winchester model 770 .300 win mag for $150 and a Ruger Redhawk .44 mag for $200

The one I wish I could have bought in the late 80's was a HK 91 .308 I saw at a shop in Lynnwood for $600 near new but I was so broke I could'nt pay attention and I probably would still be paying for it  :chuckle:

Found and got a Browning Abolt II Medalliion left handed (the only real way to shoot)  :chuckle: in 30-06 with a leupy fixed 4 on it for $450 out the door.  Not a scratch or ding on her anywhere, couldn't have been happier.   :IBCOOL:
