Hi Forum:

I might be moving to the Bremerton area at the end of this year (or early next year) and was curious what the waterfowl hunting is like?  I'm originally from Michigan and did waterfowl/small game hunting there.

I really enjoy jump-shooting and of course, hunting out of the duck blind.  I wasn't sure if Washington was more big water (layout boat shooting) or really what to expect.

Is there much waterfowl hunting in the Olympic Peninsula area?

Thanks
bas

Hey there.  I live in Bremerton.  I have been cruising this board for some time and saw your question so registered to give ya my .02...plus I needed to register anyway.  Anyhow......the hunting is pretty good, but like anything, depends on how much you want to put into it.  Areas I hunt, I'm usually the first there, so I always get my spot, but if you pack it in a bit more, you can get away from the crowd.  The drive in public units are almost always a nightmare.  I hunt the tidal flats about 45min from bremerton, I simply use a canoe to get out there.  I can carry it myself, drag it, easy to hide.....you get the idea.  It doesn't take much.  There are a few other spots that are usually good for a bird or two but nothing great.   Ft. Lewis is about an hour away and has good hunting in the marshes, but it's a pain to register all your stuff to hunt on post.  Theres some great areas up north, stanwood area, but thats a bit far for me over on this side unless I make it a full day.  Anyhow, to answer your question, yes the waterfowling over near bremerton is good, of course you got your bad days but I've never been skunked, and it helps allot if you have a boat, row-boat, canoe, heck anything that floats, you don't have far to go from the bank.   PM me if your interested or if you make it up this way and want to go see some of the spots I use.

Stape:  Thanks for the offer.  I'll let you know if I do actually move to Washington.  For this upcoming season, I'll be in Michigan.  However, Washington's waterfowl season goes a little longer so maybe I'll get to hunt later in the year (December/January).

Just curious...how does the sea duck hunting work?  I read somewhere you need a special permit.  Is this for the birds themselves or just to hunt on the sound/ocean?  Do the Eiders, Harlequin, Long-Tail (Oldsquaw), etc come into the salt marshes?  Or is that more layout/boat shooting on the open water?

Thanks
