What Bullet?
« on: August 13, 2012, 07:16:18 PM »
I know another one :sry:

I have a Traditions Deerhunter, 50 cal. It hasn't fired rite in ages.

I took to reading some posts about caps not firing and became intrigued.
Turns out my cleaning skills suck. :bash:
Well I was off work for a week, so I got out the musket and went to work. She is all pretty and fires like a dream.

So

I am thinking of maybe using it on my cow elk hunt this year.
It is a 50 cal, 1:48 twist, max load 110 gr, I have a full pound of Pyrodex RS. I am looking at changing from #11 caps to #11 magnum caps. Seems to be a lag in firing I don't remember seeing before.

Any suggestions on Bullets or maybe a powder change?
Oh yeah. I have been out of muzzle loading for some years and see some bullets without sabots on the market( Hornady FPB). Do you still use a patch with these?
I've really only shot balls with mine.

Thanks in advance.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!

I'm way just a beginner in this ML stuff, but here's some thoughts:

Check the regs where you plan to hunt. I'm focusing myself on Idaho Elk, so for me 'full bore lead bullet only'

Heavier bullets need fasted twist rates. Mine is 1:28, which is fairly fast. Yours is almost half that rate.

It's not necessary to max your powder load because a lot of that powder will blow out the end of the barrel before it burns. In fact, I have read of no one who maxed their powder load for best pattern. Bullets get wild if pushed too hard/fast.

From the max load safety aspect, heavier bullets create more pressure. More powder creates more pressure. Fasted powders create more pressure. THE MAX is commonly thought of as "grains of powder" but there is soooooo much more to it than just grains of powder. Read the manufacturers limits and don't push it. No good will come from it!

Sabots seem to work really well for most, but you may have to experiment to get a combo that does not need a sledge hammer to load.

The most time-consuming rule, (and the most fun) and it seems to be a RULE, is that EVERY M.L. has its own personality and will like a different bullet/load/lube combo! Just start with some estimations and then bench-shoot for patterns to find YOUR best fit.

i'd give the 370gr maxiballs a try with 70-100gr pyrodex rs.

1:48 will stabilize a 400 - 450gr conical with no trouble but they are not much fun to shoot  :yike:
