Tuna Charter
« on: August 14, 2012, 11:12:20 AM »
Anybody have a solid recommendation for a tuna charter?  Prefer single day six-pack type, but if the price is right a big charter works too.  Looking to go late September-ish (between High Buck and Muzzleloader elk).  Weekdays are a-ok.

Westport and Ilwaco are full of tuna charters. I dont think one is any better than another. Out of Westport, I prefer Westport Charters, The "Hula Girl" or the "Tornado".

I saw this guy on a search and made me think that there might be more 6 pack'ers out there that some of you guys have been out with.  Have you been out tuna fishing with this outfit?

I actually think there is a big difference between charter boats - I've been out with Steve Westwick on the Hula Girl for salmon and bottomfishing a lot over the years.  Also went out with Kevin Marks on the Tally-Ho when he was running the boat.  I'd fish on any boat that guy was running.  Been out on a few less great trips, too, even if the fishing was good.  A bad crew = bad trip, in my mind.  I can buy fish at the store a lot cheaper usually, if putting up filets was my only issue.

As far as tuna charters are concerned, since I've never done it, I'm more interested in the testimonials of anybody here who would recommend a boat/skipper - or would advise of one to stay away from, and why...

Yep. I agree with Skillet. Maybe a few of us should look into booking a boat sometime.

I've never personally fished with him no. I have my own boat and have fished nearly side by side with him, and talked to him several times on the dock. Him and his deck hand are great guys. All of his gear is good higher end stuff, nothing like you'd find on a big charter. I know several people who have been with him and all of them have had nothing but good things to say.

The only other boat I know of in westport that does 6 pack charters is a big red Bounty boat, not sure what his charter name is but hes on dock 6.

That's great info, man.  Thanks.

I'd definitely be up for a group of HuntWa'ers going out chasing tuna.  I got a buddy who's in (probably), and if we got 4 more guys we could fill that 6 pack up with people we wouldn't want to toss out of the boat at a bait stop...

I'd be calling and getting it booked, they are filling up quick if not already full. The tuna are here and they are hungry... I'm headed to westport tonight to go kill them tomorrow, we finally have a decent forecast, the last couple weekends have been a little sporty, bait stops are tough with 20 knot winds!

Pick one that uses live bait! It's 1000x better than just trolling!

I second the Hula Girl. The Westricks are the coolest. The Tornado is good also. I have not fished on his (the captain of the Tornado) boat, but he helped on the Hula Girl one time, and he was a good soul. And I also think that there is a big difference in charters.

I have only fished on the Hula Girl and the Tornado with Westport Charters out of Westport. I have fished on quite a few boats for sturgen, salmon and bottom fishing out of Ilwaco and always had a good time and limits no matter the boat or charter company. Guess that is where my comment on one charter not being any better than another came from.

I have talked to many guys that don't that many fish. Some boats come back with only a couple rockfish on a BOTTOMFISHING TRIP  :yike:
