Know your target: wolf vs. coyote
« on: August 18, 2008, 05:40:19 PM »
I gather that these are coyotes from the title of the picture.  These seem bigger than the average coyote I've come across in the wild.  Having never seen a wolf before, is the easiest way to tell it apart from a coyote just size?  For example, I know from plenty of real world encounters how much bigger an elk is than a deer, but there are also facial/antler features that distinguish.  I guess I want to prevent shooting what I thought was an adult coyote and found it that it was a pup wolf.

We will just have to go out and try to call them in, and when you shoot the wrong one, I can turn you in for the points.... :chuckle: :chuckle:  What are friends for, anyway?

I would assume it would be fairly easy to tell the difference, but never really gave it any thought.

Try and call them in. The way I hear it, only coyotes will come to the call.

You just need to make a call that sounds like a domestic sheep and you are good to go.

I could just see myself trying to explain it to the judge:

"your honor, this package clearly is a coyote call. Therefore, it is impossible that wolves could have answered it.  To heck with the prosecutors DNA analysis..."
