What would you Eastsiders consider "Fresh"

I promised someone fresh seafood in late Sept.  I can get clams then but, not the crab I was hoping.  Is 20 day old frozen crab considered "Fresh" to you eastsiders that don't have access to salt water?  I am thinking not and I should just stick to a glut of clams.  Thoughts?

I think this really depends on the person.....when I got an insane amount of crab from the other side I knew it was fresh off the boat but frozen prior to my receiving it.....I also have a bunch of tuna, salmon, bottom fish, etc...all came frozen but I know who caught it and when  I love my fresh frozen seafood gifts....I feel pretty blessed that people share with me.

Thats fresh enough if its eaten right away.....Im of the belief that all seafood should be eaten as fresh as possible.....if you cant/dont eat it reasonably soon, share it while its relatively fresh, dont gift it 6 months or a year later.  Same with game meat....if youre gonna share, share it while its fresh.

If you get them the last couple days of the season, go ahead and freeze them in the shells, cooked and cleaned.  If it's only a few weeks, they should be in pretty good shape.

Unfreeze and tell them its fresh. They won't know a difference. By god look at the salmon/steelhead they bonk and eat.

When I was a young pup, my Dad would catch steelhead near Machias and freeze them in milk cartons after cleaning. He fooled his Dad for years because his Dad always thought they were fresh caught. So I guess I wouldn't complain if I got fresh frozen crab.

Having grown up on the west side in Port Angeles (30 years) and living on the east for almost 19 years now,I may be a bit biased, But stick with the clams. Dungees dont freeze very well and no one will convince me otherwise. As they say at subway, EAT FRESH

Caught, cooked, cleaned and froozen in the shell is fresh enough if consumed in a month or less.

With crabs it would be the catch on Labor Day and would have to be frozen because they wouldn't be given until I got there on the 21st of Sept.  With clams, I could dig them on the 20th and then bring them over.  I'd prefer to take a bunch of crab but the clams will be much more fresh

I wouldn't turn my nose up at 20 day old frozen crab - I would make me some crab louie sammys with it 
 
but if I'm going to fork it out of a shell and dip in butter then ya it needs to alive when I give it a hot bath

I know, I have a 75 gallon fish tank (For sale for $40 BTW ) that I can fill with sea water.  I can catch them and keep them in the tank and feed them until time to boil them the day before the trip

Don't get caught doing this as you cannot prove when they were caught and that only legal numbers were taken at that time.

I've frozen leg/body sections for a couple of months and people seemed to like them just fine.  Beggers aren't supposed to be choosy as they say.     I've had good luck with long term storage by picking it, freezing in a bowl after pressing as much air out as possible, and then vacuum packing it after removing it from the bowl.

Forget it--the cost and difficulty in maintaining a saltwater aquarium is not worth it.  That's why freshwater aquariums are so popular.

have them come pick up the crabs a month earlyer and bring the clams later. Make crab cakes.

If you are going to freeze the crab in the shell, only cook it 1/2 way. Than finish it, in Boiling water when you are ready to eat it. Or cook it completely, remove the meat and vac pak. But truthfully, for me, fresh is a right off the boat and into the pot. BTW I clean my crab completely before  cook it. Cut in 1/2, remove the shell and guts and then cook it. So much easier to eat! It will stay well in your fridge a 2 days after cleaned.

I know where you can get plenty of fresh crabs on the east side    Not to sure it will be the crab screaming if you boil them in hot water though

Since frozen crab is nowhere near as good as fresh unfrozen, I'd stick with something else like clams. When I go and visit friends and can't bring my own fresh caught crab I just buy it, Westport always has fresh live crab. Those east siders love fresh crab... Along with all other seafood.
