Quail Hatch
« on: August 16, 2012, 06:09:20 PM »
I've been seeing great flocks of quail with full broods in Cle Elum.  I also saw some great Pheasant and Hun broods two weeks ago East of here.  It is looking pretty good from my scouting.  I haven't been looking for grouse, but my buddy in the USFS says that he is seeing tons of family groups of blues in the hills around here.

Any other scouting reports out there?

I saw TONS of quail last weekend....... They all had a lot of babies.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.

My brother tells me there are plenty of huns in his area of Eastern WA, and he is seeing quail, too.
Over here on the westside, well, I've killed a couple grouse so far, so I'm well ahead of my normal season.

Quail population is very healthy here in the SE. Pheasants were arond earlier in the year, but they are few and far between as of late. Hopefully they will be around for my new pup later.

Some quail. No pheasant. the REz is turning out to be a dead spot for game birds in the 98948 area.

The areas I've been around here quail hatch looks pretty good.  The other birds on the other hand are few and far between.  In the past month I think I can count on two hands the number of pheasant, chukar and huns I've seen.  If fact last night in an area where I normally see a covery of a dozen huns I only saw 3 birds.

Quail and pheasant numbers are better than I feared after a wet/cold early summer but still less than half of a good hatch.  This is in the higher rainfall areas on the dry side.

We haven't had as many quail around my place near Colville since the last hard winter two years ago, I am seeing a few good hatches and think they are slowly building numbers but think our wet early summer hammered some of the chicks around here.
