How much would a gunsmith charge to port the barrel on my .308? I want to lessen the recoil for one of my sons.
I don't think porting will lessen the recoil. The chunk of lead will accelerate from 0 to 2800fps before it reaches the ports. Only real way to lessen the recoil is to go to a lighter bullet.

Completely false. That's the main point of adding a muzzle brake is reduced recoil.I agree with jaymark. Have your barrel threaded for a brake instead of barrel porting. Lots of guys on here have em and can give you a better idea of price.
a couple hundred bucks.. Well worth it! I have a break on my 300 ultra mag and shoot 210 grain bullets and it kicks like a 308... So a 308 with like 168 grain bullets should kick like a 22-250..

It's a Savage .308 but most of the styles I'm seeing are for an AR. Will these work? Anyone have any recommendations? $50 or less would be ideal. Also have a Pachmyr pad on it already
You could try Federal Fusion .308 Win. 170 Gr. Low Recoil Ammo before you put out the money for a Break. Keep in mind a Break will radically increase the loudness of the shot as well as reduce the recoil. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/federal-fusion-308-win-170-gr-low-recoil-ammo-20-rds.aspx?a=286527&bi=141567

Won't shoot groups at all and I won't buy anymore.
