Barrel porting

How much would a gunsmith charge to port the barrel on my .308?  I want to lessen the recoil for one of my sons.

I don't think porting will lessen the recoil.  The chunk of lead will accelerate from 0 to 2800fps before it reaches the ports.  Only real way to lessen the recoil is to go to a lighter bullet.

Completely false. That's the main point of adding a muzzle brake is reduced recoil.

I agree with jaymark. Have your barrel threaded for a brake instead of barrel porting. Lots of guys on here have em and can give you a better idea of price.

Muzzle break will be the cost of the brake, and about 100.00 to thread your barrel and install it.... most of the 100.00 is set up time for the lathe, because that is what takes all the time..

a couple hundred bucks.. Well worth it! I have a break on my 300 ultra mag and shoot 210 grain bullets and it kicks like a 308... So a 308 with like 168 grain bullets should kick like a 22-250..

I know a good Vais break and a good recoil pad tamed my brothers .338 WM down to less than 30.06 type recoil.. it is a real *censored* cat now... it is a left handed bolt and I shoot it right handed with no issues...

It's a Savage .308 but most of the styles I'm seeing are for an AR.  Will these work?  Anyone have any recommendations?  $50 or less would be ideal.

I only addressed the porting issue.  Yes, a muzzle break will decrease recoil, but you will have to thread your barrel for one.  The AR-10 style of break will work, but the .308 threads are 5/8", and the breaks for .223 AR-15 barrels are 1/2" thread.  If you have someone thread your barrel, make sure the lathe indexes to the BORE, and not the outside of the barrel.  They are not the same!

Keep in mind a Break will radically increase the loudness of the shot as well as reduce the recoil.

Tried the fusions and the remmington reduced recoil rounds and the gun hates both of them.  Won't shoot groups at all and I won't buy anymore.

Good suggestion though.  I wish it would eat those like it does these accubonds, it would definatly be the way I'd go
