Caribou?
« on: August 27, 2012, 08:50:56 PM »
Just cerious if anyone here has seen a caribou in Washington or Idaho. Ive spent some time in the back country and have never seen one. Ive seen grizzlies, a wolverine, wolves, goats, sheeps, cougers, and bigfoot  ;) but no caribou. Ive talked with people Ive meet while back there and theyve never seen one either. I recently had a run in with the boarder patrol this last weekend and had a nice chat with them and the guys I was talking with have never seen one either while patroling the back country but they said they believe their are about 4 or 5 radio collard caribou raoming Washington and Idaho. Ive asked the forest service but they give me the usual "oh we see them all the time at the sulivan ranger station"

I am curious too.  That would be cool if there are some in the state, but the wolves will probably get them.

I'd just like to know if anyone has seen one. If theyre there someone has to run into one sooner or later.

Back somewhere around the early '80's, Dad me and my brother made the annual late summer pilgrimage because Mom wanted huckleberries.  Off to Flowery Trail and up near the 49 DN ski area we went.  Just short of the top, gated road on the north side of Flowery Trail into what I think was Vaagen Bro's timber land.  Hiked in with 30-30 in tow and some bear tags we went in search of Mom's huck's.   About 2-3 miles in walked around the corner on the road and standing in the road were 3 of them and about 6-7 more on the high side of the road in a 3-4 year old cut.  After the 3 jumped up into the cut, they just stood their as we walked by not giving 2 hoots about us.  Of course, no camera.  Another half mile and 5-6 gallons of hucks later, back to their house outside of Chewelah we went.
Right up there with one of the coolest things I've ever seen wildlife related.

yep- flying is the best way to count them.  They leave some of the only tracks way up in the high country.
