western blacktail.
« on: August 19, 2012, 12:59:00 PM »
Just wondering what everyones thoughts were on calling blacktail with grunts or rattleing. I have beat up brush, fir bows and have had bucks run right up  behind me with a very curious trot and look in their eye, it was last year last few minutes of the afternoon, and i foolishly stepped out of my blind to get busted by a nice 4 piont. macking scrape niose is one thing, does rattle or calling work? any thoughts on the matter would be good!

Wayne Carlton makes a Blacktail Doe Estrus and Dominant Buck scent that works very, very well.

Ive rattled, and grunted with success, and also use scent. I have not used blacktail deer urine, just old whitetail stuff, and it works pretty well. I think at least it buys me some time if the wind shifts, or stops a deer in a shooting lane. Ive also used fawn in distress, and does bleats..works pretty well also. Although calling doesnt work all the time, maybe if it did, they would make it illegal. Ive used a fast note grunt called clicking on bench leg bucks during the late season..but it was not just blind calling...I seen em out of bow range, and drew him in a little closer.

You should post up some pics of the Anacortes deer... I always like seeing how big they get!
