Hoochie or Squeeze Me??
« on: August 19, 2008, 09:54:33 AM »
I am looking at buying either a Hoochie Mama, or a squeeze me elk call.  The sound very different
from each other.  Which one, in your opinion sounds and works the best on bulls?

Any other suggestions on good calls?

thanks

hoochie mama seems to be a stand by for alot of guys. prolly differs on which herds you are hunting as well if you wanna get picky. you could always buy both.

I've used a hoochie.... they're ok.  never used the other.  generally use other calls more than my hoochie though.

I use the Primos Sonic Dome mouth diaphram. Easy to use and be as soft or loud as you want.

hoochie,  primos pack bugle makes a good cow, and a mouth reed.....like to do a couple together to make it sound like theres a group of cows versus one loaner.

A variety really.  I like diaphrams cuz they're hands free.  For pure sound some of the bite & blow are nice... there's a Wayne Carlton that I like.  I also like the Hyper lips calls. Each kinda have there own +/- in respect to ease of use, sounds produced, etc.

Ive been working with calls pretty diligently for the last year. I have 4 diaphrams, 2 bite calls and 3, yes 3 bugles. I almost bought the H-mama but decided not too because they were selling like hotcakes. I think there is too many and most novices are using them. This equates to massive cow calls in the feild all souunding the same.

Then I saw Tred Barta and his guide buddy Dan use one in Wyoming in a public area and they did well calling in beasts. Did not get em close enough for a bow but for a ML it would have been lights out! So I still may get one as the diaphrams take practice and consistancy. I dont know if Ill have that once/if I ever hear a big ass bull chargin in. Dont want to mess up the mood so the consistant H-mama might be best for a noob.  :dunno:

Either way I love my WC double and triple domes. Once you get em going good its hard not to practice. I carry them and my cd's in my commuter car and the neighbors around the golf coarse always wonder when they will see an Elk as they constantly hear them. Lol

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

I do the same thing.  I have several Primos diaphragm calls and a 45 min commute through Spokane an north.
I get lots of funny looks, but could care less.  I am a long ways from feeling confident about the diaphragm calls, that's why I as asking about the squeeze ones.

I had the hoochie but noted that MANY people have them and I wanted to sound different.  I bought (actually traded) for a bearmanric call wehn I went to NM  just for that reason.  I was the only one out there with it.  I wouldn't say its easy though.  If you are not a mouth caller at all or have a crappy gag reflex, the hoochie certainly works.

I carry a hoochie, a handful of diaphrams, and a bite & blow from Wayne Carlton.  To me, the bite & blow sounds artificial, so I don't use it much.  I use the hoochie and diaphrams quite a bit, but the diaphrams are key for a number of reasons.  It allows you to be hands free when they're close.  When they're not, you can use both the hoochie and diaphram and sound like more than one cow at the same time.  The diaphrams also allow you to go back and forth with the bugle (I can't get the bugle condoms to work very well).  Of course, all that being said, by far my biggest bull came on a string into the hoochie, albeit in an area without much pressure.

I just use my lips. It is hands down the best call, but it is hard to get good at it. I carry the Hoochie Mamma for back up and a diaphram to back that up. If you put the Hoocjie Mamma in your armpit and muffle it a bit it helps.

neither.... I don't think those squeeze calls sound like elk at all... But I am just used to using diaphragms that sound more realistic at least in my opinion...

I seldom ever bugle, but I like the sound of an Abe's. As for diaphram calls, there is this one call, cant for the life of me remember what brand, that I buy several of each year in MT. Its a smaller size call, and sounds very much like a very small cow. Im pretty well hooked on it. Its just a single latex, and a small plate. Its blue, and it works very well.

Thanks everybody, one more question.  Which bite and blow, if any, sounds realistic. I have the primos Lead Cow & Calf call that I thought sounded good, until I compared it to real elk
last weekend.

I'll reverse that, the only one I wouldn't recommend is the Sceery or however you spell it one.  It probably works, but I sure hate the tone.  I think sound more like a crow call.

Primos I-mak-a-da-bull-krazy.  Like the hyperlip but not as loud.  And a couple diaphrams.  I like to sound like a couple different cows!

Bugling Bull's Who yrr Daddy cow calf call is one of the best bite and blow calls on the market - at least in my opinion!  Has a tone button to convert sound to make it quieter and get a more nasley sound out of it that those cows and bullls absolutely love!

These are all good single reed cow calls:
1.  Sleezy single reed cow call by Glen Berry
2.  Woods wise single reed
3.  Carlton single reed
4.  Primo single reed

I have never tried the Rocky's single reed...

Hand held squeese me call can do half cow calls it is a little harder with the Hoochie Mama.

These are all easy to operate and gives you more voices to use in the woods.

When you guys say bite and blow calls are you referring to the various estrus whine type calls?

I use several different bite and blow calls, primos and Berry makes around my neck, never been able to get the hang of a diaphragm call, I also carry a squeeze me call in my pocket and many time qill give it a squeeze in one direction while blowing the mouth call in a different direction to give the impression of multiple different elk that are calling.  I think as a stand alone cow call either the Hoochie or the Squeeze me are not terribly good calls, not that guys haven't killed elk using them, but don't feel they would ever be my "go to" call.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I posted some pictures on page one of "scouting tucannon 1014" in this same forum.

Saw a decent amount of elk, nothing huge, but I know they are there!

If I had to use only one call it would be the Sleezy Cow Call. It's tempermental around spit sticking the reed. I carry two for this reason if I spit stick it while working a bull. I can even get a squealy bugle out of it, but it sounds pretty bad. After Glen Berry's stupid poaching *censored* he did in Idaho I was worried he would go belly-up so I bought 10 of his Sleezy cow calls, but it sounds like he's keeping his head above water. It also makes a great predator dying rabbit call.

I use diaphagm calls for bugling and cow calling; Primos blue single palate plate for cow calling.

I use Big Bull productions black triple, Quaker Boy Herd bull double for bugling and I'll always buy 4 or 5 other brands before season and *censored*can half of them for bad fit or bad sound.

I lost my bugle tube last year in Oregon so I bought one of Rocky Jacobson's bugle tubes this season, so far I'm real happy with the sound and quality of the tube. I usually use a chunk of 1 1/2 ABS, but this year I'm getting all fancy.

I bought a Hoochie Momma and have used it but only mixed it in with my other cow calls to create herd sound. It's allright but I won't replace it when I lose it, which I always end up doing. I'll carry my Abe and son bugle head for locating and just to change it up if I'm going back after a bull I have already worked with my diapragm call. Sceery's are good cow calls but after I lost mine I never replaced it. I always want 4 or 5 different cow sounds just to see what the bull will bite on.
