Drawn for Disabled Road Access
« on: August 24, 2012, 06:12:14 PM »
I received my "CONGRATLATIONS" letter today for the Skookumchuk Disabled Road Access point.  Anyone have any experience with it?

If I remember correctly, isn't that the 3/4 mile road that leads in to the middle of the field at the Skookumchuck wildlife area  :dunno:
Its a locked gate but dont go far from the pavement.

I could be wrong but that's what I remember it going  :dunno:

It's off of Thompson Creek Road just past some power lines, and is suppose to be 1.9 miles of road.  That's about all I know.

I have a few  :chuckle: I'd bring my Polaris with the winch on it, and probably my little trailer behind.

These are new hunts for disabled this year. I don't have a clue about that area, going in blind. I gotta do my home work for sure. I don't trust my 1967 Bell trailer to get down there, so I'd be in the comfort of a cheap dive.....

Hey Campmeat, I grew up in Dry Gulch canyon, two canyons North of the Lick. My family, and neighbors, ran about 400 plus cows/calves in that area, been over it horseback, footback, hunted the area, cut wood, mushrooms, yada yada. I too am disabled, USAF retired/disabled, my wife takes the whole season off, vacation, to chase deer, elk. Any questions?? Will help where we can. Congrats on a great tag. Tight lines, fishingfool.

Thanks. I found out yesterday that my permit is for 4 miles of road behind the locked gates at Lick Creek. I was told there are no other roads to go off of. I'm wondering if this is a good deal like the WDFW makes it sound like ? Sounds like a waste of time and a bunch of money for a 4 mile disabled hunt. I'm going down there on Sept 4th to look at it. I talked to Bob, the wildlife mgr and he said they don't get hardly any elk out of this particular area behind the gates. Hell, I don't know, I just know it's about 300 + miles from my house and don't want to waste my time. Besides, I think walk ins are allowed behind the gate too.  :dunno:

Hey Campmeat, ya, I hear ya. That lower end of the ridge is all bunch grass and basalt outcroppings. I was hoping you could reach some of the upper portions that are good elk country. That lower end would be good about the 15th of january.  Regards, FF

My old man drew Lick Creek Disabled for deer a few years ago. We drove up the road exactly one time. The thing to remember, it's still open to everyone else as long as they walk in and on opening weekend over there, people will be walking in. Good deer area, never seen an elk, wouldn't apply for it again  :twocents:

That's kinda what I'm thinkin' is ain't worth a crap. I can tell the WDFW I don't want it and they'll give it to someone else. I'm gonna give it up. The way it was presented by the WDFW, it was a HUGE opportunity for someone disabled to get an elk. I have a disasbled permit for IEP land up near Northport and would have a better chance at an elk for a whole lot cheaper.

Thanks for your info guys, 'ppreciate it

:yeah:  And they are doing fresh logging right now.  There are some deer up there, but not many.  Have not seen elk in there for a while.

I called the WDFW today and told them I thought their idea of helping a disabled person was a shame. The women that puts this together from the WDFW is supposed to call me back so I can ask about it and get some answers. Nobody I've talked to has a clue about boundaries etc, typical. I'll keep y'all posted.

The description of this area in the pamphlet lead me to believe it seemed to be a good disabled road area, but after reading some reviews on here I'm starting to wonder.

Really its like any area.  You need to scout and get there early.  There are a lot for guys who walk in there.  There are elk in there, but the phesent release site is close, so once they start shooting the shotguns the elk and deer run!!

They did a little timber clearing out there last year and the deer are using it, but they stopped clearing the brush and cutting the fields in the wildlife area, it makes it tough to get around.  They did extend the road by a half mile or so, that should help.  If you need any info shoot me a PM, those are my stomping grounds and I spend a lot of time in the area.
