Winston Creek 520 for early deer
« on: August 29, 2012, 08:14:27 AM »
How is the Winston creek for early archery? We did some scouting on the Weyco side and didnt see much of anything. The 2000 road i beleive looked promising and saw a few. Anyone hunt this GMU?

Thanks. This is the first year of archery for a buddy of mine so a doe would do just fine. I noticed going down the 2000 road that there is DNR land with a lot of clear cuts along the road. Looks pretty thick other than that. May give the DNR side a shot the Weyco area seems like there will be a lot of people.

Opening day of deer shouldnt be too crowded, But in a few days when elk season starts it will be crowded. I will but up that way on saturday trying to get my buddy his first bow kill on film. I will be in a grey f250. If you see me stop and say hi!

No. The State owned land never closes and the weyco land is open still as of right now

The gates are open, but the Weyco land is closed to motorized access. Only the public access corridors are open for vehicle access.

If you want a deer I would go somewhere else. Winston is one of the worst deer area's on the westside. No joke.

Early season for a doe I would have to argue that statement! I see 20 deer most days

We did some scouting and saw good signs. This is only our second year bow hunting so we aren't looking for any monster bucks or any buck for that matter. I heard about the Vail tree farm but sounds like there are a ton of people that go out there. Any other suggestions?

If your willing to drive 2 hours, then you should check out 624 & 621. Lots of does. You'll see 20-30 in an hour. Lots of private property so go the night before and get permission from a couple of houses just in case. These beauty's are apple fed and taste great. Just make sure you can drop 'em with one stick.
