I get tons of personal messages about photography almost daily. I love to answer them and help people. My wife told me I should do a set chat time on photography for an hour or two where anyone can come in and talk or ask questions about photography or cameras. I thought it was a good idea but I'm not sure if there is any interest in this. If you are interested let me know and maybe we can get a set chat time to do it on here. I have also pondered the idea of taking a few to NW Trek some day to do a hands on shoot where I might be able to help those with their photography. Let me now if there is interest in this type of thing. Thanks.

Maybe use you as a lens porter.

Oh, Sagedawg is the guy for you there. He volunteered to be porter.

If you are interested name a day of the week and time that will be most convenient. I obviously work banking type hours so any weeknight and weekend would be fine. Probably a weekday evening around 7 or 8?

Just bought her the Sony A200K with an additional 70-300mm lens. She is out and about now taking pictures of stuff........

Sounds like a great idea.
I've been poking around lately looking for books for myself and my girlfriend...

I'm pretty pleased with the way my pictures turn out at times, but there are certain situations where I can't get the photo to come out *just right.* Most of the problems I have come from lighting issues (I think).
My girlfriend gets downright aggravated because she can never quite capture what she see's in a way that draws the same emotion or or "awe factor." I think the biggest problem there seems to be creating the focal point or "placement."

Any books you might recommend?
We're stuck with point-n-shoots for now (broke) but I'm pretty pleased with my Kodak Z712 overall...especially given what I paid. I'd love to pick up a DSLR, though....

What about a real photography class maybe a field trip? I am a much better hands on learner. If we meet up somewhere and head east or something I could take 5 guys.

I would be in like Flynn but I am way out here on the OP, One class I would be very interested in is the editing of my photos. Not necessarily the PS3 type stuff but just some basic "if you have this problem, do this" or "when my pics look like this here is how I fix them" or "If I play with this tool it does that to my photo" etc....etc....

I really really appreciate all the help I have gotten from you guys and am looking forward to participating in some lessons for sure.

Better photos means better memories !!

Even when I lack good, sound photo equipment, my day spent with Pope, was quite educational. I was able to learn some basic things to remember, and hopefully, he will take me on another hands on tutorial. Pope is a very pleasant person to be around.

Looks like we need to do a NW Trek trip. If I could find a babysitter, Saturday might work. Otherwise, my next open weekend day is Sept. 6 or 7. You guys pick the day and I'll plan it.

Othewise, I can plan on having an open photo chat here from 8-10 on Monday or Tuesday next week. If those are good days and there is interest, we can go over everything from gear to shooting to post processing. It might be good if you have some examples of work to talk about, you upload them to the site before so we can refer to certain pictures or problem scenarios.

Photography has really opened up a lot of opportunities for me. There really are no seasons or limits to the species you can shoot, unlike in hunting. I can honestly say I'm just as excited when I take a great shot as I am hunting an animal.

I would be up for a field trip, but the chances that it would work with my work schedule are slim. The chat seems like a good idea too, but I have no idea what type of questions I should be asking in order to make myself better.

More than likely, if someone has a question then the others will wonder about that as well. We can just ask them in chat. I'll plan on being in chat Monday at 8 PM for those interested. If there is enough interest, I could do it on Tuesday at 8 PM as well. Ideally, a hands on field trip would be the best. If there are 3 or more guys that want to do NW Trek on Saturday I'll get a babysitter and do it. Let me know if you want to do it.

Yeah, and we are kind of getting to the busiest time of year. If we bag out on the NW Trek trip we can try and do one this fall. Ideally we should have done this all boring winter and spring.

Side note as i was writing this i looked up at the TV "big cat diaries" was on and had a cheetah chewing up a really nice camera i thought it was kinda funny

I just got back from Vegas and saw this thread, this is an awesome idea. I've got a Nikon D50 that I bought the wife a couple of years ago and have been wanting to get better at nature photography.

That is what I thought, maybe it is the chat environment where the questions and answers are in there but you really have to be paying attention to which information is about the subject and which is not. I had to read and reread just to follow along and some of the things I still don't understand.

Thank you very much Shawn for putting it all together and also for saving the transcript, maybe next time it can be a sticky thread under photography and the "quote" feature could be used so the answers could be posted along with the question. I have so many questions and appreciate all the answers you provide. Nice work !!!

I think we need to do it in person. I'll do the chat thing again, but getting out and doing it hands on is much better. I feel like it would make more sense and you would pick up what we talked about in that chat in half the time. The chat is fun for general quick questions, but when it comes to exposure and the relationship between iso/aperture/shutter speed, it's complex. Actually, the most fun are the analogical questions. I'd be willing to do more of those. Whatever it takes to get more of you into photography so we can see those big animals you guys are seeing when out in the woods.

That's a nice lens, but it has some drawbacks. I've used it. It's an absolute tank. It is also rumored that they are coming out with a new version with IS. Not sure if that's true. If you are using a crop camera, I'd go with the 17-55 efs f2.8 IS. It's a great lens and one I'm trying to figure out if I need as well. Sometimes 24mm isn't wide enough.

I am going to shoot an animal, load it in the truck, and drive over to the coast so Pope can take pictures. It might be easier. Actually, being in the chat room and hearing the information put into laymans terms was really helpful. I really appreciate him taking the time to do it.
