I have not been hunting in about 17 years and dont know exactly where to start. Being stationed up here at Ft.Lewis, army was a blessing to be able to hunt and fish and I really want to get into the woods and do some hunting on post or off for either deer, elk cougar or bear right know I only have a savage 110 in 30-06 so that allows me to hunt deer and maybe cougar , but dont know enough about bear or elk just looking for a start or a decent club or I guess a hunting mentor as weird as that sounds being a 25 year old man, but in essence that is what Im looking for. Well thanks for your help in advance.

The weapon that you have is good to go for any big game here in Washington. As far as deer hunting goes, you are stationed at a place that has some GINORMAS blacktails!! I'm not positive but I think that at least one of the top ten blacktails shot in WA was shot on Ft. Lewis.

Awww, have a little more faith in the tested and true -06!!!
As mentioned, that'll take anything you can put your sights on in the state of WA...over 100yrs old and very widely used, you can't go wrong with the 30-06.

Lots of info floating in the pages of this forum...spent and evening or two searching the areas and species you're most interested in and you'll be good to go!
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

You can try st Helens for elk to get there go to the Randal, WA. take a right at road 25 and go about 25 - 30 miles and your in are 560.  Since you are in Ft. Lewis go to the trap and skeet range and talk to the guy that runs the place, he used to run the Northwest Adventure Center (NAC) at Ft Lewis and is very knowledgeable about big game in the area.  I forgot his name, but he is retired Army.
Progressives are coming for your guns.
What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.

As was already said, your 30-06 is good for anything that you can hunt in this state. In fact there really isn't anything that can beat it. Equal it sure, but when you start getting into the big magnums, all you're really getting is more velocity and more recoil. Up to 300 yard shots your 30-06 will do just as good as anything. Beyond that and you will have to hold over a couple more inches than you might with say a 300 Win Mag. But the majority of the shots you're going to take will be well under 300 yards. So don't let anybody tell you your 30-06 is inferior. You've got the perfect all around rifle and cartridge so THAT is not a problem. Good luck, and stick around, you'll get plenty of help from the guys on here.

Chambers lake is in the middle of Lacey, no hunting there....
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

The only gunshots you hear over here near Chambers lake is the gang bangers.....or the homeowners defending their property...  :chuckle:
