rookie mistakes
« on: September 01, 2012, 09:52:34 PM »
so today i learned my first hard lesson in archery hunting and hunting in general. i have never been snorted at by a deer before. while pounding the brush i here something that sounds a lot like a sneeze, i turn to see where it came from but dont see anything. then it happens again and again. i start thinking black bear. I freak cause i dont have a bear tag or a side arm to scare it away. i put my release on just encase. I hear the "sneeze" a few more times; i keep searching for the cause but dont see anything. then a big brown blur jumps about 10 feet in the air  :yike:. now i know what it was and try to stalk it but i cant run it down  :bash:. I felt like a huge steaming pile cause i got spooked by the animal i was hunting. i put the spot into my gps and will continue to hunt that spot cause me and this deer have a history and i am determined to come out on top.

Oh ya the good old doe snort! Our 2.75 old learned about that today. She was throwin rocks down the hill and i told her the animals would be upset at her and sure enough there goes mama deer snortin and a blowin down the hill! So she at 2.75 years old learned an imporrtant lesson of the woods!!!!

Lol, I heard my first snort in the middle of the night. Woke me up and scared the crap out of me, I finally woke my buddy and he was like its just a deer. Now when I hear it I just get pissed, I had one whitetail snort at me even after he ran about 200 yards  :bash:

I believe that these can be found in Mossy Oak now....

I got up yesterday morning and hit the woods early.. I walked 1/2 mile in and realized I left my release in the truck.. Good thing I didnt see any deer. Then I went to another spot, and I got within about 20ft of a doe, and knocked an arrow and drew on her without her knowing, but I failed to see another doe at 20yds, the further doe saw me and busted me. Then about 6 deer went stomping and blowing down the clearcut.. Oh well. This morning maybe better luck.

The important lesson you should take away here is that blacktail will often hold cover. Look for them at ground level. They will just lay and let you walk right by. Bet that deer doesnt make a sound the next time a human gets close. Good luck.

I have had blacktail snort at me alot ...sometimes for 10 min ...I was sitting on a landing watching this clearcut and it was real steep where I was sitting and I stood up to stretch my legs and all the sudden a doe jumps up right under me , she takes off down the hill and stops when she hits the bottom and stands there forever snorting her head off ...I get up and leave and as I am walking away she is still snorting  :bash: :bash: Never thought I smelled that bad :dunno: :chuckle: As far as having a score to settle with that deer I would keep after it ...You know where he is now So just slow down a little ..what I mean by that is if your still hunting spend more time just standing around and listening and move short distances at a time ...most of the animals I have taken have been by still hunting and I love sneakin up on critters ....Persistance usually pays off ...it took me 3 years to catch up with one buck I killed ....hunted him 2 years with my bow and seen him twice and that was in November ....then I switched over to rifle and killed him the 3rd year 3:15 on the last day of general season in October ....  Sorry for writting a book  :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:

They are trying to smell you out of the glands under their eyes.   They have seen or heard, but have not smelled you yet.   Some will do it over and over again, or even reposition and try some more in oreder to figure out what you are.

MANY confuse this with a buck snort, snort/wheeze.   THEY ARE NOT RELATED

:yeah: had it happen this morning. was working some jack firs, wind was good she didn't know what I was, she crossed the drainage and kept doing it. Lasted probably a good 15 minutes till I gave her the bird and moved on. Kinda fun to watch them try to figure out what's going on.
