Savage Axis or Ruger American?
« on: September 02, 2012, 11:12:34 AM »
Looking for a deer/elk rifle in case we finally move back west, and we've been having problems with coyotes, i'm not worried about overkill on the yotes. I think .308 or 30-06, i don't reload, and probably won't for a long time if i do. Under $500, I've been looking at the stainless savage axis, i like the ruger american but it doesn't come in stainless steel. Any other models to check out? and thoughts? Prefer to stick with bolt action.

As much as I love Savage, I don't care for the Axis. I think the Ruger American is a better gun. You may be able to find a used Tika in that price range.

Savage has other models. But would not buy axis .
Buy better grade Savage or Stevens if you can find one, and learn to swith barrels.

I just shot a Savage Axis .308 last week and wasn't impressed. The gun felt cheap and i didn't like the trigger. The bushnel scope on it was a joke i think it might of had a 1/2" of eye relief.

I have read many unfavorable reviews of the Savage Axis. Go with the standard Savage 110 or 111 if you want a Savage. They are good, accurate rifles for the price, and the triggers are adjustable.

I don't know much about the Ruger American but I know I'd take it over the Savage Axis.

Another good one to consider is the Marlin. I've heard it is one of the best rifles you can get for the money. You can pick one up for $330.

I have 2 of the marlin xl7's and highly recommend them!  My stainless in .270 will print 1/2"@100yds with handloads and my 25-06 will do almost as good!

Ruger all the way. The axis is the biggest hunk of junk ever built and called a rifle.

The Axis seems to be capable of very good accuracy in my experience but the magazines are pretty junky and a bit problematic, the triggers definitely need some help. If you are trying to save some dough on a Savage look at the Stevens series.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
