And it begins!
« on: September 03, 2012, 07:16:38 PM »
Idaho wolf season opened on Aug. 30th and it runs until March 31st. Wolf trapping season opens on Nov. 15th and runs until March 31st also. I'm planning on heading out there this season with a friend or two and with 10-15 wolf tags between us we will be gunning for a whole pack.

4 down so far already... keep it coming!

I see in the regs it says the wolf tag is good for a calender year.  Does that mean all of 2012 or does it mean 1 year from when I bought it (8/31/12)?  We were over there Labor Day weekend but no doggies.

I called Idaho Fish and Wildlife about this and they told me that if I buy tags this year they expire on Dec 31, 2012.  I am waiting until January 1st to buy my tags because then I can hunt until Dec 31, 2013 (Jan 1 - Mar 31 and Aug? - Dec 31).

Kill them before they move west.

I never understood how an animal can be considered endangered/protected in one place and hunted openly just a few miles away.  Shouldn't they be looked at as species and not by some border that they certainly don't understand.

Randy Newberg made a good point on the "On your own adventures" show about the wolf hunt.  He said something similar to "every sportsman has a responsibility, if he or she can do so, to harvest wolves for the sake of the resource".  That's not an exact quote but it's the point he made that caught my attention.  I've always thought that "somebody" should shoot those things but, if every hunter who is hunting in a legal wolf hunting zone killed a limit, that would make a dent in the population.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

Wish I could afford to drop one or two... would be over there in a heartbeat.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Howl and stalk. Get a wolf howler and howl. If you get a response put on the stalk, but if they are close and the terrain is not right for a stalk whip out the distress calls. That's what I'm going to be doing anyway. I was also thinking about using elk urine as an attractant, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it.
