Advice hunting the Blues.

Any advice on SE corner of the state?  I've never hunted east side before, but this is the year.  Also looking west in Grayback or East Klickitat units, even though there isn't a ton of public land. Any advice there?

All I can say is don't waste your time with East Klickitat. Even the timber company land is gated and posted no trespassing, I'm assuming the hunting clubs have it leased up. Hunting clubs everywhere. Lots of deer to be seen but absolutely nowhere to hunt.

there's some stud Muleys in the blues...  Seen one buck a couple years back that would easily go 30"...  Can be tough country to hunt, not a whole lot of open ground and there's a TON of timber for the bucks to hole up in.  Still hunting the deep timber would be my strategy...

liar...there's no deer there at all...barely an elk....just a bunch of wolves and a couple coyotes.
i heard there was a moose there once, but no deer at all.

Well this was before the wolves were discovered... so who knows???

Yes there are plenty of deer in the blue's!! Like mentioned though it is some big country and thick at places. My family has a cabin(one of like 10 grandfathered in) in the Blues outside of Dayton up on Twin Buttes, pretty much the end of the road! There are plenty of huge muleys  just hard to find at times.There tends to be alot of people from tri-cities who head that way but most stay in the foothills/open country such as the Tucannon. Just research the area and decide how deep you want to go. You could probably even contact the Dayton Chamber of Commerace.

I myself have never shot a deer in the Blues. My family has a wheat ranch in Waitsburg so do my hunting there with an occasional 1/2 day visit to the cabin in search of the "Big One".

My advise is to load up your stuff and just go! Find a camp spot up out of Pomerory, and enjoy. The Blues are a very beutiful place to be in the fall. I usually spend a few days up there every fall looking for elk, but don't see a whole lot of deer.

Thanks for the help everyone . I plan on making a scouting trip next weekend. I plan on looking over the area SE of Dayton, and will give Pomeroy a look see.

Keep in mind that next weekend is opening weekend (Monday) for archery deer and if its like last year in the BLues it is crazy with bowhunters, grouse hunters, and bear hunters. Deer that can be seen from the road now will be long gone. There are deer but they scatter like crazy in a hurry. Good luck. nwhunter

You guys just keep right on over looking the blues the deer are there you just have to know how to hunt.Took  a 152 5/8 inch whitetail 2 years ago there but your right theres no deer........

i would have to disagree with a few of you, i have hunted the blues all my life and there are plenty of deer up there. you just have to know how to hunt it. in the general hunting season there isnt much for monster bucks around because they dont show themselves till the rut. but now there are big bucks everywhere in the last week i have seen 3 bucks well over 170 and one was a absolute pig! he would go well over 200. 4 years ago i killed a 170 class buck. you just have to spend the time scouting and going in deep. the deer are there you just have to be patient.
