Wolves messin with you hiking in the dark!!!
« on: September 05, 2012, 08:43:23 AM »
Got a min of a 3mile hike in the my deer hunting spot and it takes place before the sun rises.  Always wanted to know if maybe there is chance of problems of wolves following you/messing with you while your doing your hike in in the dark. /etc.

Now that I hear of more wolves in Washington and in areas of potential deer hunting spots.

Any stories?

My understanding is that Wolves are pack hunters rather than ambush predators. I would think as long as you are armed wolves should not be a huge issue. Mountain lions on the other hand...if one of those gets it in their head that you look like breakfast I hear they are very sneaky. Course this is just the opinion of an amateur...so anyone more experienced feel free to school me if I am wrong. ;)

Wolves are, well, wolves.  You are allowed to carry now while bow hunting, so I would recommend it.

Never thought of it, but I wonder if wolves had anything to do with that change.  Just happened a year or two back I believe.

I was just reading a book referencing the lewis and clark journals, talked about three guys doing something away from the group and while sleeping had young wolves come up and attack them. bite the guys arm or something. we will definetly see some wolf encounters here in wa soon, it will be interesting

I hunted in Idaho for a couple of years in an area that has a healthy wolf population.  I caught a glimpse of one once as it was running away from us and we heard them howling at night. Both years we had to leave deer over night and come back for them the next day.  We never had a problem with them munching on the deer and we never had a problem with them bothering us. The only problem we had was with them reducing the deer population.

Yes a cat will mess with you coming in the morning or out late.  they follow you at a distance, just close enough you can make them out.  Makes you unnerved for sure.  I haven't had any experience with wolves stalking, but other threads have talked about it.  I would assume until someone scares the s*** out of the pack by hazzing or lethal force, there will be close encounters and contact.  Dogs can't seem to resist pressuring, taunting and playing with their game and the like.

Whenever I used to take the trail through the forest each Saturday to grandmothers house to deliver goodies I was always paranoid of being attacked by an angry mob of wolves. Glad it never happened.

This is a recent experience that I had in the daylight... I would imagine they would be more aggressive with the cover of night fall!! These wolves came in downwind from us.

Nope not wolves. You can thank the right to carry folks for protecting your right to carry while hunting any season in this state. It was always the law but the Game dept. thought they could restrict your self defense carry during some hunting seasons. The right to carry folks pointed out their error and forced them to follow state law.

All firearm laws and regulations are pre-empted by the state legistator. No city, town, county or agency can create any law which is stricter than state law on the carry of self defense firearms.

Local laws and ordinances that are inconsistent with, more restrictive than, or exceed the requirements of state law shall not be enacted and are preempted and repealed, regardless of the nature of the code, charter, or home rule status of such city, town, county, or municipality.

Right Place, you better not head that far in, you might get eaten, stay close to the road!!! LOL!! Really, show me an artical about a person getting attacked by wolves! They have been in the US forever and I havent seen or heard of anyone getting attacked! Not saying it hasnt happened but VERY unlikely! I would be more worried about cats, that happens. Its just one of those things that we all just freak ourselfs out about, the things lerking in the dark! Best of luck on your deer hunt! Lets hope the wolves havent gotten them all yet!
