Worried about my cam
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:22:49 AM »
So i set my trail cam out for the first time on Sunday and i'm really nervous about it still being there when i get back. I set it off of a game trail but close enough that i think it will get pics.  After i set it, i looked back probably a dozen times to see how hidden it was, and it's defenitly visible if you were looking for it.  It's just over a 2 hour drive from my house, but i think i might check it this weekend to see if it's still there.  Any tips on setting one up to not get stolen?

I had a aluminum fabricator build two camera lock boxes for my cuddebak attacks. If you know of anybody in your area , i would suggest that getting a couple built is a good idea. I also use mine for protection from bears.

I modified an old electrical disconnect box (screw-in fuse type, it's that old) and lagged it into a tree and locked the camera in with a big padlock.  And my camera is where only animals go!
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

I placed it myself--but some people regard me as something of an animal!   :chuckle:  :chuckle:
But the only other animals that go there are the wild kind... :llam:

Don't set it up near a well used walking trail. I've been using up to seven cams at one time over the past 4 years and have never had one go missing, never gotten a pic of a person either. I did have a lot of bear issues this yr but I think it had to do with the late spring, one can was torn off the tree and lying on the ground. All public property. Lots of times I thought someone may have been in the area but never had one taken, I'm sure your cams fine you should probably just let it soak.
I have on occasion strapped my cam to the brush on the top of an old growth stump in an effort to conceal it a bit better

I think most outdoors people are pretty honest and respectful of other's property.  Just don't put it where there are Tweekers, Dopers, Lowlifes, Dirtbags, or other unsavory characters...  :mor:

There shouldn't be any tweakers up there but who knows nowadays  :dunno:
I'm gonna head up Saturday and grouse hunt and move it deeper in.....if it's still there

Best to put it where you are sure nobody goes.  Animals tend to go where it's quiet and they can be left alone.  The fun is seeing critters where you least expect them to be.

ya, and don't drive your ATV right to it either - couple passes with an ATV and your site is done for.

Well, I went to check the cam this weekend and....It was still right where I left it! It only had 15 pics on it so i moved it to a spot a little further up the draw next to a watering hole. I also added a bag of mineral lick stuff and a brick of mineral stuff as well. I'm  gonna leave it for a month this time so hopefully I get some sweet pics!

Last week I checked my cam.  17 pictures, 15 of the brush, one of the pesky Robin that was setting it off, and one of a hawk clutching the Jay that was helping him!   :chuckle:

It is a strange feeling, being new to the cam game myself, I had a hard time staying away from it but the gas gets expensive! In fact I figured with the gas I was burning to go check it every week I could have bought two more! Leave it for a month, you might get more pics
