Nice!  If that's the rifle you picked up it looks like you scored a beauty?  How much if you don't mind me asking or which shop?

Here's a general idea on how to put a value on it. Depending on the condition and what you paid for it, you could have scored big! Great piece of history either way.

You certain about it being a .270??  Looks like everything so far says it should be a .30/06.

I would verify that before I thought about firing it just in case.

Is this a 98 Mauser that was made into a sporting rifle????

rebarreled, military sights milled off, new trigger group and safety????

can you post a pic of the entire rifle????
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

On-line found these pics, Johnson Automatics, semi-auto top pic and Mauser 98 bottom pic.

Which one looks more like your rifle?

Man, it's not even my rifle and i've been combing the net for at least a half hour reading stuff, talking about an amazing read and lots of good info.  I don't know if it's the original or not but to learn some piece of history about this rifle and it's maker has been exciting.

:yeah:   Explains the .270 instead of being a .30/06.

Curious why it is marked the Johnson Automatics though....   :dunno:

From what I've read:

The front of the barrel collar was marked “30-06” in the 12 o’clock position and “41” in the six o’clock position. There were some Johnson barrels made in .270 and 7mm caliber, but these were not used in the U.S. military service.

Read more at Ammoland.com: http://www.ammoland.com/2010/10/14/johnson-m1941-semi-automatic-rifle/#ixzz25jle1YlJ

And;

hello ,,johnson made barrels and i've seen a few on vintage springfeild bolt action custom rifles built post ww2,,is it a springfield action or mauser action,,or enfield action it's built on? sounds like a rifle built by or for someone with custom features ,,some of these sporters will bring good money depending who built them and the quality of the job,,so as for value it would depend on how nice it is ,,where your located and the market as well as condition..proably in the 400-600+ range depending on the condition and the craftsmanship put into it..possibly more if a well known gunsmith built it or at auction or to a vintage custom rifle collector,,some of the old gunsmiths built some really nice rifles and it sounds like your is a classic example of that!

The Army didn't buy very many rifles from Johnson.  They probably made more money selling barrels to the Sporterized Mauser rifle builders.  After WW II, and for many years after, that was the only way to get a quality hunting rifle.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Johnson sold barrels and barreled rifles on Mauser 98s
The last couple of Johnson 41s (or 1941) that I have seen were in the $4k range and they were not real nice.   Too completely different animals.
