PRVI Ammo = Crap
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:54:19 PM »
picked up a box of PRVI Partizan ammo for cheap stuff to do barrel break in.

While it was cheap, it was also total crap. I had 11 out of 20 fail to fire!  55% failure rate! Of the 9 that did fire, I had to try two of them twice to make them go boom.

Of the 9 that I shot, I got a 6 inch group at 100 yards.

I thought I had a bum gun. I then put 68 rounds of reloads through the gun without a single fail to fire. Groups went to under an inch in most cases.

I have never had this big of an issue with "factory ammo"... I see they get 2 stars on Midway so I guess one should read the reviews. I was not concerned with accuracy so that was not a concern, but I kinda expected them to go boom though!

In looking at the reivews (after buying of course!) I see now that 6 of the 12 reivews report mis-fires.

My advice - stay away!!

I've had really good luck with 22-250 PRVI ammo. No problems at all.

I reload...    Haven't bought factory ammo in 25 years or so. (other than rimfire)

I've had excellent luck with both .380 and .223.  No failures at all for me.

Maybe it is the 338 lapua Mag ammo with the issues.  Regardless, after seeing a 55% failure rate on my first box I'll not be buying anymore.

Ive shot 30-06 150 gr fmj and it was great for practice ammo. No complaints. I also have used their brass for my 6.5 jap its not to spwc and jams constantly. I dont think consistency is their thing.

I've shot a lot of Prvi Partizan ammo and while it wasn't the best stuff I've ever shot their match ammo for .308 seemed damn good through my Dad's Douglas barreled 788 but judging by smell they use powdered camel-*censored* for propellant!

I have seen some failure to fire in guns with soft or weakly sprung firing pins with this stuff in a couple of pistols.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Have shot a lot of Pvri... their match stuff is awesome, I shot 4 boxes of it out of my .308.  Their whitebox stuff was crap though... wouldn't even group well at 50yds.  The 168gr match .308 was some of the best ammo I have ever shot short of my own loads. Guess YMMV with it...

my 7-08 loves the stuff!  shoots 1" groups at 100 yards, at half the price of cor-lokts(which don't shoot worth a damn out of my rifle).
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Probably thick/hard primer cups, light firing pin strikes, or both.  The only misfire I've ever had is the one time I bought 1,000 Wolf primers.  One reload wouldn't fire after 3 tries.  decapped the cartridge and found that there was no firing compund under the anvil.  Had a couple of old benchrest shooters tell me that they had that happen with CCI primers, so I guess it's not that rare.

Have you cast your chamber? You may have a chamber just a bit long and their ammo a bit short. Or have you checked for a light striking firing pin(this could be with a new rifle) and can wear away the lightness after a few rounds. Also the primers could be a bit harder than your reloads.

Disassemble your bolt and clean your firing pin and the recess it sits in.  Sometimes in the manufacturing/assembly process a bit of dirt or filings gets left behind, causing a light strike.  I had a Taurus SAA revolver in .357 Mag that shot sporadically until I cleaned the crud out from under the firing pin.  Only time I ever had that issue, but I guess hygeine in the gun plants is not always the best....

:chuckle: Duh it's crap ammo, but your gun isn't striking the primer hard enough most likely.  :twocents:
