Edmonds Coho Derby
« on: September 07, 2012, 06:14:06 PM »
Who's going to be fishing tomorrow? I'll be out there with my GF and  FC . We'll be at the Everett launch at 4:30, hopefully it won't be too crowded at that time! The fishing should be good and the weather is supposed to be nice. Feel free to post up you successes on this thread and tell us how you do. Let's see which Hunt Wa member catches the biggest fish. Also post up your boats total weight. It'll be interesting to see who I beat out and by how much!  :yike:   :chuckle: Let the trash talking begin!

Have fun out there.  I’ll wait until Monday to fish, less hassle that way.

So how did it go?  I see the current leader is only 11lbs.  I expected better than that

We did good, limited the boat easily and had some crazy fish landings that I couldn't believe we managed at the time! Unfortunately our best fish (cleaned weight) was only 5.78lbs, a good fish and great eating size but no derby winner.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

We put 4 on the boat, one just over 8 lbs and the others all 5-5 1/2ish.  Beautiful weather!

We hooked 7, landed a 5, 7, 8 and 11, and were back at the marina by 9:00am. Nothing big enough for the derby but we entered one for the mystery fish.

I'd be up for any tips regarding heading out. Looking to wet lines Saturday am. Plan on working the edges of the bar, rips, and open water if I see birds feeding.

I'd say watch your sounder.  We were on them shallow early (35-45ft at 5am), but when the sun came up and it started getting warm it seemed like they went quickly to deeper water.  By 930am we were pinging and catching fish around 140-155ish.  Gotta fish where the fish are, right?!

Yep, you do. Good advice. We plan on being lines in at sun up. I'm going to run a cut plug off the stern and start the rigger shallow. I'll move them deeper sooner than usualy based on the sounder and your advice. Thanks.

They should be there for another week or so with the lack of rain, maybe a couple weeks.

We fished two rods, one with a small dodger and "Chrome Green Mackerel" Krocodile Spoon on a 28" 20# leader, the other with a mylar green flasher, 22" leader to a "acehigh" fly with a small piece of hearing on the forward hook for scent. Both setups produced hits.

We fished one at 45 feet and the other at 55, good luck.

thanks for the tip. I'll be keeping the radio on and scanning 16. If I get on fish I'll give a call out to switch to 68. Maybe a few of us out there can help each other find some chrome.

We were doing figure 8's 1/2 mile to a mile north of the Edmonds ferry dock in about 250' of water.

Fishing will be good for a few more weeks. The Everett Coho derby is the 22 and 23 of this month. That's usually the peak of the season. Agreed that area North of Edmonds is usually good. My best luck has been with UV and glow products, flashers, squid and spoons. I like 32" leaders, herring strips, lot's of scent. I'll be out tomorrow AM, and 1 day this weekend. If anyone wants to join FC and myself tomorrow, pm me. I'll be out from 8:30 to 12:30 then I have to go to work. Launching in Everett. You don't need anything, I have plenty of gear. Just make a donation to the gas tank.

Exactly what we were hitting them with.  Glow squid w/herring and scent, green and silver flashers.

Oh, did I post green flasher and squid?  I meant to post purple downrigger ball and a corn dog towed with dental floss behind a 6X18 inch chunk of tinfoil.  Stupid autocorrect.
