My first elk!!!
« on: September 10, 2012, 02:35:09 PM »
shot this guy about 7:00pm on the 8th in a clearcut where i had been seeing a heard about every evening so i sat kinda on the edgeof the clearcut about 100 yards from the timber line. i had been there for about two hours then him three cows and a two by three came over the hill they were just slow walking then a bunch of weekend hunter way down in the valley were just bugling like crazy like every three seconds i heard as many as three bugles at the same time :o so they look down that way and i drew back then he didnt like hearing those bugles so he started jogging strait to me as he went into a dip i stood up i was sitting on a stump and as he came out of the dip he was about 40 yards infront of me and i shot then he kinda stood for a second then ran about 40 yards then slowly walked with his head down up the little hill on the edge of the clearcut and died right on the edge of the clearcut!

great story great shot and a nice set of horns to remind you of your 2 hour cold butt.

Good job man.
Pretty sure I talked with you and your pard while ya'll were taking a break, and we were getting water during the first week. Ya'll got hosed by Port of Blakely shutting down your scouted areas?

Either way, congrats.

Sure was.
I think I told you we shot at a cougar that was stalking us, But after leaving you guys, we stirred up a storm, and had 5 bulls going. All were within 70 yards in the thick stuff behind where we all chatted. All we could see was hooves and horns over the trees. One was a 5x, one was a 3x4, and one was a 4x. The others would get within 10-15, then get ran off by the other rag horns.
The two rookies with me shot one at 7, and one at 9 yards almost 3 min apart. Almost unbelievable story. They think the stuff is easy now.

Anyways, did not mean to thread jack, but i know you and your buddy were working for them, so congrats. Hopefully your pard gets as luck too.

After we all walked up the hill, and we split to the left down that triangle road. ;) There was 3 other bulls in that group within 70 yards.....
Wouldnt be my first choice, but if I was in need of a quick hunt.. :twocents:

He walked UPHILL for you before dying?  You lucky little ........  :chuckle:

Shot my first one last year - he shot me a dirty look, gave me the bird, then tucked into a cannonball and laughed as he rolled 300 yards straight downhill before he died.  And I thought I was already in the bottom when I shot him  :chuckle:

Great first elk, and really cool pics with the fog in the background.  Congrats!!!
