huntin elk....next year
« on: September 10, 2012, 08:53:23 PM »
I've decided to start using my bow for elk.....next year. I don't get much time to chase elk during modern and I've been meaning to make the switch for both deer and elk the last few years. I figure, starting with one species (plus I really enjoy huntin deer with my single shot pistol) is a good way to start. I intend to put in many shooting hours over the next year. Any suggestions on "what else" I should focus on? Also, does anyone know of any good bow shops, near Bonney Lake, I can take my bow to get tuned, string replaced, etc. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If there is nothing closer, the Northwest Archery, in Puyallup, helped me out, a great deal, when I first started.  They installed my sights and gave me a few lessons.

New shop in enumclaw, rock creek archery, nice shop, nice guy i switched over to him. Get a bugle and mouth reed, you need to be as comfortable at 60 as you are at 30. No need to buy camo, as they are color blind, they look for movement. I wish I had a camera man to film myself and post videos of us getting close to bulls in jeans and t shirts and t-shoes.

Oh and lastly, you NEED a rangefinder

Shoot a lot and many different angles. A range finder is a must. Go out an guess what distances are then check them with the range finder. I have also been close to whole heards of elk with jeans and a tee shirt but camo helps a lot. We all know that! Great choice on the switch there is nothing like it. Be patient and straight shootin to ya!

If hunting in blue jeans, 'T'-shirt and t-shoes is a "Bad Idea", my question is what did we do before Camo suites?  Personally, I feel the hype over camo is over-rated.  the ony one you are 'hiding' from is other hunters. MR hunters have to wear bright orange and they get theirs.

I agree with ALL of the positive advice given our newest (to be) Bow Hunter.  To add a wee bit to it, I would advise to, also, study up on the annatomy of your game to ensure your arrow placement is exactly where it should be for the quickest kill.

Best of luck and shoot straight; I look forwade to you pics, on here, next year.
