When do bucks start scraping trees?
« on: September 09, 2012, 05:32:32 PM »
I know bucks rub trees to get the velvet off, and again during the rut.
Are they rubbing hard enough right now to actually scrape the trees, or is that only in Oct/Nov?

Just wondering when I should start looking for fresh rubs (not that I don't already keep an eye out).

Thanks!

I saw a couple this weekend. Velvet rubs, they've got a while until they start rubbing aggressively due to rut. Like a month and a half

I have never heard of a buck rubbing a tree during the rut? maybe this is something new to confuse all the hunters?? Bucks rub their antlers to "Cure the itch"

They definitely rub during the rut. Territorial thing. Definitely not new.

Their rubbing their horns now.  I caught this nice bruiser on my game cam, I rattled and bleated and he grunted back, a nice 3 consecutive low grunts, he came up but didnt give me a shot he stood behind the thick stuff. A nice spike and big DOES came by later but I let them passed.

It's how their antlers get colored. So I'm sure they keep rubbing awhile after all the velvet is gone.
