bull down, goose prairie tag filled! updated with pics and story!
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:54:43 PM »
so i guess this story starts on september 7th. After putting a lot of miles on the boots i finally found a good transition spot where the elk were coming out while it was still light out. there where a lot of bulls just seemed they were holding up till dark and trying to hunt them in their beds was impossible due to the noise level of walking. so my plan was just to keep getting closer and closer till i found them up and moving during lighted hours. so back to the 7th and was that evening i got to a spot i thought i needed to be. i was there early and after a few hours of sitting the noise began. first a cow call to my right, then my left, then bugle in font little to the left, bugle strait in front of me. i was in the mix! so i whipped out my phelps cow call and began working it. just a couple chirps and this bull came off the hill side in a full blown run, then stopped about 100 yards away barked about 5 times like a dog and then back up the hill. so i chirped a couple more times and full blown charge to 100 yards away and bark like a dog and run up the hill. this happened probably 5 times. so i got my gear together and figured i would get that 100 yards and try again. well that didnt work he just stopped 100 yards farther up the hill. so at this point i dont know what to do and dont have another person to help. so i backed out and gave them the night and the morning free of me. so the next day i spent planning how to hunt this bull. i came up with a plan that set pops up behind me and our buddy down wind and down hill to the right as to try and get him to be in place to intercept the cows since i knew where they bedded and which way i thought they were gonna go. i figured i was gonna have to be quite so i went in ninja style, dropping my pack and anything i didnt need, wearing only fleece to be silent on the brush as i walked through as well. i ascended the hill as quite as a mouse and sat down where i thought he was stopping at when i would call thinking this would be the best opportunity for me to get a shot. i sat for maybe fifteen minutes when i heard him thundering down the hill to my right (this bull was always in a full blown run) and then he went back up the hill then he turned and went to my left then came back down and is running strait at me! :yike: , by the time i stood up drew my bow and realized i was on the trail he was running down, he was ruffly 5-8 yards away! i had no time to aim and recurve style shot my bow with instinct  :archery_smiley: hitting him a hair to the right side of the center of his chest. mean while and not afraid to say it i was running out of his way like  little girl thinking he was going to run me over, but he slammed the breaks and wheeled around not 3 yards away from me and went about 30 yards at stopped. i knocked another arrow and got ready to shoot again but he took a few steps and i seen it! the the wobble walk! i knew it at that point it was over. he managed to go about 10-15 more yards and piled up.  :whoo: as i ran down the hill to get pops which was only 80 yards away. this was an amazing trip and paul with chinook pass outfitters was a great guy. well worth the money and turned out was really affordable. he came up the next morning and packed it out and took to squaw rock and put it in the meat locker which was really cheap. 5$ a day for storage! . so after fifteen years i finally got my first elk and feel pretty good about it.

its a 5x5

Awesome story!!!  Got to love when they are coming at a run down the trail you are standing on.   :yike: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Congrats!!!
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
