You can get a newer bow that is used off of eBay for a good deal or sites like archery talk.com, older bows like that I would stay away from, it doesn't even look like it would be compatible with today's accessories for bows such as rests, quivers and sites.

assuming this one would be for you, yes it can kill big game. I don't wanna sound like a ass here so here goes. I don't see a draw length listed, do you know yours? The sight on there is as old as the bow and you would probably want to switch that out, cannot see the rest so  :dunno: . With older bows always take them to a professional to have them look them over first. Trust me, had a friend pick up a old high country, shot it, got real good at 20 yards, set himself up out walked a doe, and bam! the riser broke and hit him in the head. His wife called me and another buddy worried when he didn't come home after dark and didn't pick up his phone. We found him, laying on the ground in his blind.  He got a good concussion out of it.

My dad has a bow a lot like that one. POS. He wants a new one  :chuckle: My best offer for that guy on Craigslist would be a water bottle with a hole in the bottom  :chuckle:

I bought my 13 year old daughter a bear apprentice 2 (pink camo) brand new for less than $300....made her shoot at least once a week all summer long and she can still just pull #40.....wont let her take any shots past 30 yards. Just some food for thought.

Don't be in such a hurry to buy a bow, like has been stated in previous posts hunting with a bow is going to take a lot more practice and time to do so. Drive yourself out to puyallup and see Doug at great northwest archery and get measured for draw length and see a bout shooting some different poundage bows so you can be fitted properly for hunting. Take any one else with you and have them do the same. A bow is not one size fits all. You need to take your time and do some research. Plan on hunting the rifle season this year then get your bow during the off season and practice, practice, practice.

I would practice this season and go after them next year.  Bow hunting is not like rifle hunting.  You have to get up and close then be accurate with the shots.  Lots can go wrong and your getting into the game late this season.

hey guys, I'm asking about these bows for me, i guess everyone keeps missing that part  :bash: the only part of the original post that was about her was me stating she wanted to bow hunt not shoot, the rest has been about me so we can stop with the (especially those that keep repeating it like i cannot read)  brow beating me over thinking I'm gonna hand a inexperienced kid a bow and tell her to shoot at something, injure it, and watch it run away, I'm a VERY long ways from being that dumb  and for those that keep telling me she will never be able to, its not gonna happen, shes too young and weak, etc,  I'm here to tell you my neighbor broke out his 50/55 lb compound tonight,  she pulled it back just fine several times tonight for fun begging to shoot it, he was astonished how easy it was for her   :IBCOOL:

I don't bow hunt anymore however I will jump in here and post my 2 :twocents:. Just go to Cabelas and look at a package deal. Usually you get everything you need to start for a pretty good price. Besides that she may not even like it so spending a fortune on say a Mathews or Hoyt may not be worth yet to her. Bowtech, PSE, Parker, etc are all great bows and a new shooter can grow into them. I just wouldn't go used. Archery can get very complicated as far as arrow weight, broad head weight, string loops etc. All you want right now is a bow, some arrows, and a release and then practice, practice, practice. My point being is keep it simple to start with the tackle used for bows. As for hunting this year, well I would never say no to hunting, but just keep in mind it may be better to practice this season to get ready for next. Bow hunting is whole new way of hunting that can either be very rewarding or very frustrating. You don't want you first year of bow hunting to be the worst.

Hey KC, I just tagged out on an elk last week so my elk season is over but I'm heading out for muzzleloader deer next week.  After muzzleloader season is over I'd be happy to take you out to our range at Cedar River Bowmen to go over a bunch of archery stuff with you.  I even have my old bow that I would be willing to let you shoot.

I live just west of you and if you want we could just meet for coffee at Four Corners and just go over a bunch of archery stuff and answer a bunch of questions for you in person.  I don't know everything but I'd be willing to help get you started in the right direction.

First of.... Right on.... Glad your picking up a bow

All right here's my  :twocents:.  If you are gonna spend $400 on a bow dont buy anything older than 5 years.  You are doing the right thing about asking guys here   You can find a good used bowtech/hoyt/Matthews around that prolly closer to 500 set up. If you are buying used off craigslist find a local archery shop to go to ( cabelas doesnt qualify) and have some one look at it like a car, meet the seller there.  It truly is an investment that will last a long time.

Arrows I will say cabelas generic carbon arrows are good.  I have a buddy who swears by them.  They can be about half the price of the top of the line Carbon Express or Eastons.  Final arrow weight is minimum 300 grains or 6grains per lb of draw weight ( i think).  Most likely you will be around 350-420 grains, so I would shoot 100 grain heads.
