Remington 721 .270 - Scope choice? - PICS!
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:29:54 PM »
Hello All,

I just found out my grandfather is shipping his Remington 721 .270 Win to me!  I'm very happy, as I need an option for hunting besides my 12 ga with rifled slug barrel.

It does not have a scope, so I need to start shopping.
What should I be looking for?  I hunt on the westside and can't imagine I'll ever be shooting beyond 300 yards.  I can spend up to $200 or $300, and will consider a used scope from the HW classifieds.

Any help or opinions would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Kelsey

The brand I have been preferring for wetside has been Leupold.  Lots of different models and powers to choose from.  The rifleman series on through to the Vari-X models I believe would all be in the price range metioned.  I would say for a fixed power scope 4x might be a good look, and for variable 3-9 or even 4-12 won't be excessive.  For wetside, I don't recommend 'fine crosshair' reticles...tend to be difficult to pick up in the low light.

Kelsy, absolutely love this gun. My dad handed one down to me, between us it has killed probably 40+ deer and a dozen elk. Watch the safety as some needed a replacement/recalled safety. Great old rifle.

That Buckmaster offered up for free above would be perfect.  Don't worry about the rubber eyepiece.  Just get a set of Butler Creek flip up scope covers and you'll be good to go.  Very generous offer.  That's the kind of people that makes this a good place to spend time.
I have the same rifle.  Remington 721 in 270.  Very nice shooter.

 :yeah:

Another good choice of scope for western WA is a Bushnell Elite series  .  They have a coating that makes water shed right off the glass (I think they call it "Raingaurd".)  Makes it nice when hunting in the rain.  But that scope would only make sense if you didn't have such a great offer for the Nikon that JKEEN33 has offered you.

Are you kidding?!?!?   :yike:
I’m really kind of dumbfounded here – thank you so much!  And yes, of course I’ll take you up on your offer – from what I have read so far it sounds like the perfect scope!
I’ll send you a PM so we can get in touch for mailing the scope or picking it up.  I’m helping organize a competitive trail ride for this Saturday, but next week I might have a day to drive out to Enumclaw.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I like the Nikon Monarch's. A 3-9 x 40 would be plenty for a 270.

I have a Nikon buckmaster sitting here on my desk that I pulled off another rifle 3-9x40. Needs the rubber eyepiece that goes on the end. Works without it. I think you can get these from Nikon for a couple bucks. Yours if you want it. I was considering putting it up on the pay it forward. You pay shipping or pick up. Just let me know if you want it.
